Question about Toshiba MW24FN1 24 in. TV/VCR/DVD Combo

DVD problem When trying to play a store-bought DVD movie, occasionally some of them just won't play. A few that I've tried are brand new out of the package as well as other older ones- it doesn't seem to descriminate. Most of them I have no problem with. The DVD's in question will work perfectly fine on other players. I have cleaned the system and lens and this has had no effect. What could be going on here?

Thank you so much for your help. Would the pick-up table you mention cause an intermittant problem? It seems like it's only certain DVD's it refuses to read, and if it doesn't like one it won't decide to read that particular one later on if I try it again. Others will play every time. Either way, I will take your advice on taking it to a shop. Thank you!!

Most likely your pickup table need to be replaced. In some cases you can turn-up the laser amplitude but this is a temporary fix at best. Pick-ups are about $40 - $80 dollars depending on the unit and unless you have the equipment to measure resistance and set the amplitude properly, especially on the new install, don't attempt this repair yourself... A qualified shop can do these in about two hours and probably get the laser for less money than you would pay... Bill

A pickup going bad - be it a DVD, CD, PS2 or some other laser driven device are pretty much identical in symptoms when the laser is failing. Usually it doesn't go all at once. The unit will play some and not others, ocassionally skip or sometimes pause-out. If a particular disc doesn't play in a unit it's likely it won't play an hour later either. Theory there is based fractal light. Could be the thickness of the film coating on the disc, a cloudy layer slightly different than other discs that do play - but it's pretty much a given set of circumstances and symptoms that hold true for most laser driven media.
    Hope this helps!

Panasonic DVD-S31 won't play sound

Did you change the audio cable, "just to rule out" If it won't work on the Tv or stereo, there probably is a audio processor problem, or a issue with the laser pickup assembly, to repair this kind of problem would not justify the cost.

Hello, welcome to Fixya!

Was this player playing previously? And how long have you been using this player? I suspect the lens of the player. Once the lens of the player becomes weak, it won't play discs any longer.

The first thing my mind goes to, is the lens. The lens id responsible for reading/loading data on discs. So if the lens is unable to read the disc, there is no way the player is going to play the disc.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or probably, a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

My ps3 slim won't play games and blue ray disk but I can still play eve movies on it, please help want to try an fix if before nhl 12 hits the stores.

Hi, It sounds like there's an error with the laser that reads blu ray media as PS3 games and blu ray movies are both stored on blu ray disks which is read by a different type of laser then a dvd is read by. There's nothing you could do to fix that on your own, the only fix I've heard of is sending it in to Sony.

Sony tv will play copies of movies from tv, but won't play store bought new ones. I mean current popular ones. It played Avatar last week but won't now. We tried several new movies and none will play. Put...

There is some confusion in the explanation here.

The TV does not play movies it displays them It is the DVD that Plays them. But of course you knew that. Some of the newer movies like avatarcan be on Blu ray if your DVD is supposed to play Blu ray but doesn't don't be surprised as they have changed the format recently. Your DVD will require an udate of firmnware. Go to the website of the DVD brand and contact support Download the update and burn it to a disc and run it.

With the TV end Make sure the resolution can be accepted from the DVD you are trying to Play. If it isn't HD or capable of 1024x768 at 16.4 then it may not be able to display the image. Is there any sound?

If sound but no Pic then start playing with the picture format. go to 8.2 or 4,0 to see if it makes any difference

DVD DOES NOT PLAY, BRAND NEW FROM BEST BUY ACER EXTENSA LAPTOP EX5230E-2177 WILL NOT BURN A DVD OR PLAY A MOVIE

first make sure that the drive is installed properly. I would advise you to install it from the manufacturer's site. Let me know if you need the installation files.

Also, it can help if you can let me know if it reads any other discs- like regular discs. Try several different types- burned cd and dvd discs, brand new discs, original discs etc.
If installing it doesn't help and the drive will not read any kinds of discs, you will have to return the laptop to the store where you bought it, or try to return it to the manufacturer, maybe they can replace the drive.

Panasonic DMR-E75V dvd problem

It may not be able to read the new format movies. Do you have any old movies to try?

Other than that, when I was repairing them at Sony, they are almost all the same.

A DVD read problem was usually a bad Laser Optic. Replaced thousands of optics between DVD players and Play Stsation 2's.

Try a different brand of blank DVD.
If that doesn't work any better, and your MacBook Pro is in fact "brand new," bring it to the Apple Store, because you have warranty redress.

My dvd player freezes when I view rental/bought movies

Is the player new? If it's a new DVD player and still under warranty, I would return it, exchange it or possibly, consider changing brands: perhaps to a Phillips brand DVD player. After all, the Phillips corporation guarantees its DVD players will play everything, just read the box in which the player's packaged - it's the best bang for your buck. With DVD players being so inexpensive these days, the best option is to buy new. Keep computing Chomskyites.

My Sanyo DWM-400 plays some DVD's and won't play others.

I bought another DVD player. I found out that all DVD's don't play on all DVD brands of players. They are cheap enough these days so I decided it wasn't worth a repair bill. The Sanyo DWM-400 plays many of my store bought DVD's and not others. I never tried a home made DVD in it so I don't know how it responds.
