SOURCE: IBM thinkpad 2647 T21 LAN Card Driver files needed...
if you are using the internal LAN card to connect to the cable modem, no additional drivers will be needed. However, you would need to configure TCP/IP settings to use a DHCP server to automatically configure the IP address. you would also need to check whether or not you have the right CAT-5 cable. you might need to buy a crossover cable.
hope this helps
SOURCE: Wireless network connection on IBM Thinkpad
Ok when looking at your question i became very currious as to the answer myself so i did a litttle research and i think maybe the info on this page here: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/33307589/certificate-required-to-c.aspx
could be of some use to you . even though the link describes a diferent network adapter the information there is about the same exact error on a router of the same type
I hope this information helps ... if it does not then let me know and i will find some more answers since i used to have the exact same laptop that you have now R40
SOURCE: IBM THINKPAD T43. I can find the switch for my ibm thinkpad T43
Are you sure you have a wire card installed? If so, then try this:
Note:
If the card has a exclamation mark over a yellow background, then this
is an indication that the card is experiencing a problem. Go to Driver
download step 5.
It is possible to disable the transmitter of the wireless card without Device Manager showing any problems.
Note: Follow the instructions provided to enable wireless card.
If you double-click the previously mentioned system tray icon, the
configuration utility of the wireless card will appear. This utility
will be able to show the status of the wireless card, showing what
channel the card is using and what signal strength is being received.
It may be difficult to maintain a connection if signal strength is low
due to either interference or distance. For example, interference can
be caused by 2.4GHz cordless phones, other Access Points in the area,
and physical structures such as load bearing walls or metal partitions.
Note:
The utility can be used to configure the wireless card settings, but if
using Windows XP Zero Configuration or Access Connections, you will
need to use those programs to actually configure the wireless card as
they will overwrite the setting of the utility.
