Cannot get main speakers (AR 318 PS) hooked up to work. Sub-Woofer is working and small surround sound speakers are working. Can you explain in non-technical terms how to hook up speakers??
Bought the same amp second hand and had same problem as there are two seperate amp chips inside one for front speakers and one for the centre and rears it could be the actual amp chip that drives the front speakers has died as there is no built in speaker protection so over driving these speakers will result in the amp chip blowing . it may be something simple but it was not on mine had to buy new amp chip and solder in that sorted the problem for me !

For powered sub :If your receiver has a sub woofer output on female RCA plug, that is the way to go. If no output you will have to get a speaker line to line output converter to then connect to your subwoofer amp input.
Unpowered sub - just hook up across the speaker terminals for each channel making sure that you hook it up in phase.
Follow these steps to connect a powered sub woofer to your receiver:
You typically have two options when connecting a powered sub woofer.
Input (1) on the rear of the sub woofer would be used when connecting
the sub woofer to the receiver using speaker wires. You would then
connect the main speakers to the opposite end, or output or the sub
woofer to the main speakers. Option (2) would be using RCA line level
output jacks, input (2) on the rear panel of the sub woofer directly to
the single sub woofer output on the back of an AV receiver.
There should be two jacks on the back that say SUBWOOFER in the "preout" section of the back panel that is directly above the speaker jacks. Either of these jacks should work for your sub hook-up. Also make sure that you set your front speakers to small in the speaker setup menu, otherwise there will be output to the subwoofer jacks.
Alright i had a chance to look over things, this is how you are going to hook up the sub. first we'll be connecting the surround sound unit to the sub woofer. surround sound unit sub woofer left front: positive (+) <-----to------------->(+) left speaker level in negative ( - )<- - -to- - - - - - ->( - ) left speaker level in
right front: positive (+) <-----to------------->(+) right speaker level in
negative ( - )<- - -to- - - - - - >( - ) right speaker level in
now that the surround sound unit is connected to the sub woofer you will need to connect the front surround sound speakers to the sub woofer. sub woofer front surround sound speaker left speaker level out (+)<-----to--------> (+) left front speaker left speaker level out( - ) <- - - to- - - - ->( - ) left front speaker
right speaker level out (+)<-----to--------> (+) right front speaker right speaker level out( - ) <- - - to- - - ->( - ) right front speaker
Alright now that the wires are all over the place and plugged in turn everything on and see how it sounds. let me know if everything is working as it should. if you need help with anything else or if something does not seem right please feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone Mark Woodring
your sub woofer has only one input to make it work. plug in your rca cables into the back of the sub woofer and the other end into the audio out or subwoofer out put on the back of your surround system.
also has 2 speaker inputs so you can expand your speaker setup. plug thos in and you can hook up 2 speakers to th output on the back of the sub.
the sub woofer speaker should be connected to the Center, the main speakers should be set to the front and the secondary ones in the rear....(front = main just in case surround is not on, center = is for that ump / boom sound, rear = that just pass you by (make you look behind yourself)
You will need an amplifier or 2 channel receiver. Hook the sub out rca jack to the rca inputs on this new amp or receiver and hook the speaker terminals on sub to speaker terminals on same amp or receiver. Your Yamaha receiver doesn't have any power for a passive sub.Just pick up any old fairly high powered receiver for fifty dollars and you're good to go.I use old dolby pro logic receivers as they are a dime a dozen today. Good luck.
sub wooer not working after connecting, no sound
