We just downloaded XP Professional on our Averatec laptop which came with XP Home Edition. It runs slow and has resulted in several other problems. How can we uninstall it and still retain XP Home Edition?
Thanks for your help.
Cynthia
If the computer was upgraded, then go into START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs, see if uninstall Windows XP Pro is there. If it is you can uninstall it and not loose anything and the computer will reveert back to the operating system that was on there, before th upgrade.
Sometimes it is there, sometimes not.
If that doesn't work, then go to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs | windows components, and take out any uneeded components. Also check your system tray (bottom right by the clock) and see if there are eny programs there that you can close or better still uninstall as they eat memory and slow down your system.

Thanks. This was very helpful. I'm afraid we have a lot of stuff on the computer that we don't want to lose. This isn't a new computer but I had the software and had heard that there is a backup system in case of a power surge or some other catastrophe. That happened at work & the tech people were able to restore everything from the partition that contains a backup system (as they explained it). Still, it seems slow and scrolling actually "rolls" instead of scrolling quickly.
You will need to wipe the PC and start over. Are there files on the computer that you do not want to lose?
