I took my PS2 (old style) apart to clean the dust out of it and when I put it back together it wouldn't come on. when I turn it on I get the standard red/standby light on the front and when I press that button it turns green and the screen turns black just like it does when it normaly boots up. The blue light on the eject button comes on for a second and then turns off. The unit never boots up and I can't eject the tray. If I press the power button once quickly to reset it then the eject light blinks on again and I can hear the motor for the lazer eye move but nothing more than that. I have checked all of the ribbon cables inside to see if any weren't pluged in all the way and I have even checked the continuity of the ribbon for the power and eject buttons and everything seems fine. I am confused as to why the unit was working fine before I took it apart and now it doesn't. I was very carefull not to damage anything when I was cleaning it up and didn't get it near any ESD's. I have taken apart a few PS2's before for various reasons so I know a little about them. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I don't really have the money to get a new one and I don't want a slimline PS2; I heard they get hot and break down easy.
It most likely is the white bar under the tray that tells the system whether the tray is open or closed. I had the same problem. Make sure that bar has the little divit in the track that's under the tray and when you assemble, whereever the white bar is located, it should try to shut the tray if open and should boot if closed. Of course, make sure all your power and other ribbons are in good condition and plugged in. Hope this helps.

I once had a similar problem. What I tried was: Take it apart, go to the "power/Restart" ribbon and replace it. The other ribbons under the disk drive might also need replacing. usually what happens is the ribbon just breaks, because they are very delicate, esp. the "power/Restart" ribbon. I fixed mine simply by replacing the one ribbon, so it may work for you as well.

It may be the ribbon cord for the restart/open button
