Question about Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Flatbed Scanner
Try tossing it off the roof of your house. That really made me feel better, then I went out and got an HP that works great.

Check the the transport lock has not come on. Unload the software and reinstall What do you have to do to direct it through Firewire and not USB Check that is is correct.

It doesn't seem to be replaceable... at least not easily. Check out the link to reviews on Amazon.com from purchaser's of this scanner:
Try to install those driver first:

Thanks for you reply. I checked the transport lock and it was off. I'd tried reinstalling software and that didn't work. But leaving it over the weekend seems to have done the trick! It's come back online now. Strange! It still sounds odd on start up so I think it's still got a problem. As for your firewire question I was given the option of SCSI, USB or firewire when I ordered it and I had more firewire ports available. I didn't have to do anything different.
Thanks again for you help.
