Recorder is made for 4x.got a firmware update diec from tech support(over a yr ago)to allow me to record(use)8x.now its hard to find 8x dvds(theyre up to 16x now).called tech support again-was told there is no update for 16x on this recorder-that i should buy a new recorder(um if they say so).i havent noticed any problem with a peticular brand...just 16x!i'm now online looking for 8x dvds...might be best way to find the 8x dvds hope this helps
I have been able to use 8x speed DVD's on this ridiculous machine. Anything else gives me error messages. However, it will not let me "Finalize" anything so none of the DVD's that I recorded can be played anywhere else. I have so many discs where I have purchased hoping they would work that I could open my own disc store. They are all 1-16x. Oh yeah, all are Maxell since it specified the few brands that would work. I wish I had never bought this pain in the ****.
I posted this in another person's question but it is probably relevant to you as well. This model (which I own myself) is outdated and needs a firmware upgrade. You might get lucky and get one from their tech support. However, I heard they stopped shipping them nearly a year ago.
As it stands your recorder can only use DVD-R that records at 4x (or lower) and DVD-RW that records at 1x. Any other media is useless. Since 4x media is outdated, it may be hard to find at a major retailer.
Let me know if you have any luck fixing this or finding working DVDs as I have had the same issue myself. I simply cannot find 4x DVDs in the store.

I've been having the same prob... bought the DVD player a bit more than a yr ago. It won't read any disc, audio or video and after loading for a while, it gives me a NODSC error. I tried using the compressed air and also chatted w/ samsung c. service, which told me to reset the device (FF for 15 sec), with nothing happening... It's been only a bit over a year and I have no warranty on the DVD player, so I can't ask for service. If I won't find a solution I will have to buy a new DVD player, but I m trying to solve this prob first. Does anyone have an idea of what to do?
When I bought my emerson ewr10d4 about 2-3 years ago, the machine only recorded on disks that were rated at 2x or 4x speed. And it didn't accept off-brand disks, it only liked the major brands like Maxell, TDK, Memorex, Sony. I learned this quirk the hard way. Eventually, when I called the 1-800 number, they sent me a disk to upgrade the recorder to 8x speed (and it was very simple to do - basically just pop it in). Helped a lot, although this year most disks in stores are 16x speed, and as of a couple months ago (November 2008) emerson didn't have a newer up-to-date upgrade available. But if you didn't do the 8x upgrade yet, call them and start there. It's a small improvement, but an improvement nonetheless. By the way, if anyone wants to buy some lesser-known chinese and japanese-brand disks, I may be able to help!
Dont worry hadi tava, just read the troubleshooting section in ur mannual provided along with it, i am sure u willl definitely solve the problem. All the best. Please rate me.
I had this problem frequently over the last year, the one thing I did notice was that if the DVD's I attempted to use were very lightweight or thin, it would not format them. If you can find any of the older, thicker DVDs to record on, it may help. By the way, the ones I had that worked best were DVD+RW purchased at $1.99 for six. They had a heavy orange enamel on the tops. Withstood daily use for nearly a year. Still have some, even though the player needs medical attention now.
i bought a camcorder from currys model vp dc 172w back in october. i took it to las vegas to record my wedding. its recording fine but i cant finalize the disks. iam folowing the instructions from the book. on 1 disk its trying for about 30 seconds then is saying disk error. the other disks i cant even get them to start running. can you help me please.
if yoy dont hav firm ware up date you cant fix the machine. the machine if working will on work on 4x. like i said if the machine is not working you maybe able to fix it with the firm ware up date that lets it record on 8x only,
now if some of the people out ther has the firm wade update disk, they could shareit with all the people who dont, i had one but its been 2 years sence i used it, i will look for it and make it available for all
Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again.
If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.
