Re: My Gigabyte Combo can't read any media???
When a dvd writer fails it doesnt fail gradually, it just fails, you will not find any solution to the problem, other than buying a new writer, because the cause is more than likely the laser/lens that has failed and they are not worth replacing, as writers are so inexpensive nowadays, hence the reason why there are so many failures, because if the cost comes down there has to be savings somewhere and the laser being the main part of a writer, thats where the quality i feel is poor

your laser is faulty and is only able to read cd tracks, the reason being that dvd's data is packed closer together than a cd, and when the laser is failing it can only read wider burned data tracks on cd's.
most older drives can't read multi session... you need to have a drive installed to be able to read multi session burn. there is no software tweak that can fix this... you need to replace the drive. otherwise burn the data as single session.
DVD combo do not burn DVD's they can only read DVD read CD and burn CD to burn on a dvd you need a dvd writer. A DVD combo is a combination of just a DVD ROM and a CD-RW.
with some models (even of LG) you only get one drive DVD/CD-RW but in dome version it shows as two different drives DVD and CD-RW. consider this as partioning of a drive if its to be analogued to HDD (though its not partioning its just diffrent PROMS)
Hope you understand that there is nothing wrong with your combo its just that you are expecting it to be a DVD-RAM which it is not.
you are probably using a DVD media that is not supported take a look at this it tells you all the supported and recommended media, also do the firmware upgrade as this may give more support to other media
I would suggest cleaning the drive with a cleaning dvd, $19.99 at most retailers. Or you can open up your computer and verify all connections to the drive are good, disconnect and re-connect to be sure.
Hope this helps.
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
See if that sorts it.
When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks?
If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD.
If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD.
Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
