I have a cannon MP160 printer. Color ink button is flashing. The color ink cartridge is empty. I replaced the black ink cartridge and want to print in blank ink only. However, I can't get the color light to go off and switch to the black ink button. What do I do? Need help immediately. Can't find my manual.

The printer will detect if there is any cartridges that has run out of ink and will not print until the empty ink cartridges have been replaced.

on the front of the printer there is s stop/rest button hold down that for 20 sec that should over ride the empty message

I have workaround for the empty tank issue:
- buy or borrow another not empty tank
- place it in
- start the printer
- it recognises the "new" tank
- turn off the printer
- put back the old, empty, but refilled tank
- turn on the printer
- print something
- it will pop up a dialogue window saying
"The ink level of the black/color tank cannot be
determined. The ink level determining function will be
disabled for the black/color tank.
If you want to continue printing without this function
press the Start button on the printer."
- Press the Start button on the printer and ignore the
button 'Cancel Printing' appearing on the dialogue window.
- The dialog window disappears.

You can print your refilled tank as many times you want from this time.

When you go to 'Printers /Canon /Properties /Maintenance / Printer Status / Ink Information' it says that the ink level measuring function has been disabled for: black [40] / color[41]. You can ignore this this message, the printer will work perfectly without this stupid function.

You could press the stop/reset button for at least 5 seconds to continue printing.

Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice-versa. If you printed with black ink missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with black ink missing even if you aren't using it. That's the case with your Canon printer.

If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.

NO sorry.. This is a real problem.. but no way around it, also if you don't buy original inks they often will not work either.

You should maybe replace the color cartrige even if it`s empty just so the printer recognize that it have both slots taken.Then try to print out in black/white.

Try changing printing preferences/properties. Click on option for color, then click on box for "black ink only" or similar. Try now. If you still cannot print after changing preferences/properties, you will need to replace color ink cartridge due to manufacturer's built-in software that prevents printing when ink is low. Great for the ink companies!!!

Secondly, to run the software your printer has to be in service mode. Do that by
- unplug cable
- press and hold "power" button
- plug cable
- press "resume" and release
- release the "power" button
At this stage, your computer will detect a new hardware

Run the software.
