I have a combination oven and microwave model # J KP86BOF1BB manufactured Nov 2002. For about a week there was a slight burning rubber smell when using the microwave and now it does not heat anything. The turntable turns when the door is open and is not turning when the door is closed and the microwave off. The turntable does work when the micro is on. Do you know what would be wrong? Thanks for your help

It's probably the magnetron which some companies provide an 8 year warranty on for parts but you'd be responsible for labor. Unless you have an extended warranty, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one than to repair this one. I tried to look up your model number but doesn't seem accurate. Do a little research, there could be a known defect and the company may help even though it's out of warranty.

Microwave smell like burning rubber

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that you are receiving a burning rubber smell from your Frigidaire microwave. I also see that your appliance will run for a couple of seconds, and then you hear a weird noise, followed by a burning rubber smell. I suggest contacting your local authorized technician, especially when dealing with your microwave. They will be able to diagnose your appliance and determine what is causing that sound as well as the burning rubber smell. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Hi hafsahparkak,

Plz follow the steps below once again ...hope it works if not plz revert:
  • 1

Unplug the oven and unfasten the cabinet body, using a screwdriver. The body should be attached along the back as well as along the sides or bottom.

  • 2

Slide the cabinet body back slightly to clear any internal brackets, then lift it off.

  • 3

Clean the oven, using a vacuum with plastic crevice attachment. Vacuum the fan and other internal parts, then vacuum the vents underneath the oven, on the back and inside the chamber.

  • 4

Reassemble the oven and plug it in.

  • 5

Fill a small bowl with a 50-50 mixture of water and white vinegar, then set it in the oven and turn the oven on high for 5 minutes. When the mixture boils, it will remove stubborn smells inside the vents and loosen food particles on the oven walls.

Wipe down the oven walls with a clean sponge.

May be a shorted metal stirrer fan bearing located within the wave guide that feeds microwaves into the cooking area. If the oven is run without a proper load (water, or food), the voltage of the microwaves increase considerably causing things to arc-over inside the wave guide. You usually can't see the stirrer bearing short as it occurs internally.

    Burn at bottom of microwave

First try cleaning the burned mark off. Dip a scrubber in lemon juice and sprinkle salt on it; this is also great for burned coffee pots. The smell can be gotten rid of this way: Boil lemon peel in water, then put the water in a spray bottle. Not only will it make your microwave smell fresh but the lemon oil will make it easier to clean. If it still smells of burning rubber, take the back off and inspect the wiring. IF you see burned wiring, please do yourself a favor and replace the microwave!

Microwaves work by making the molecules in food get "excited"-they move more-meaning, if there IS rubber burning, then there will be minute molecules of rubber in your food, which is BAD for your immune system. If it's just burned chocolate, though, it is harmless unless you are allergic.
