Ice maker not making ice

After a year and a half, the ice maker just stopped working. I've noticed some ice build up in the freezer lately, which is kind of odd. But, I know the freezer is cool enough to make ice. There is no water in the bucket of the ice maker, but I can get water out of the water dispenser. Any ideas?

    same problem. model # 106.56534400

help! There is no way I am going to pay some dude $200 to come out. As the wife wisely put it, we'll just buy bags of ice and pour them in if we have to. I am decently handy, and am not intimidated to get in there and start messing with stuff... but I definately need a bit of guidance.

thanks for any ideas or feedback

We fixed this ourselves after letting the freezer defrost. Some water must have built up and frozen in the wrong place. After the thaw and then getting it back to the normal temperature we had ice again.

Check the cam wheel beneath the front cover of the icemaker it is probably not turning.

Our ED5SHAXM ice maker is intermitant. It will make ice for several weeks and then suddenly stop making ice, the water flow to the ice maker stopes and the bin empties it's final time. Then weeks later it...

Either the freezer temperature is too high or the internal thermostat inside the ice maker is faulty.
The freezer temp must be 5 degrees or less for the ice maker to work correctly.
If the freezer checks out OK you will need to replace the ice maker.

Clicking noise in freezer I am assuming to try to make ice, no ice being made?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Ice makers can stop ice production due to poor air flow though the evaporator coils or through the failure of the ice maker module. If your certain the clicking noise your hearing is from the ice maker itself here is are some steps that you can use to troubleshoot the ice maker:

This step from the above link is important:

TEST PROCEDURESIce Maker Plugged In To PowerShut-Off Arm Down-Freezer Cold
Test points L & N will verify 120 volts to Ice Maker module.(Make sure your test probes go into the test points 1/2".)
Test points T & H will verify if the bimetal thermostat is open or closed.
Short T & H with an insulated piece of wire ( 14 gauge) to run the motor. If the motor doesn't run, replace the module assembly. If you leave the jumper in for a half of a revolution, you can feel the heater in the mold heat up..if it's good.
Remove the jumper and the water valve will be energized in the last half of the revolution.

Once you insert the jumper between T & H touch the bottom of the ice maker and check for any signs of heat within the first minute. No heat = bad mold heater. It can 3 - 4 minutes for the sweep arm to harvest the ice.

Stick your finger back in the ice maker fill tube area in the plastic rectangular funnel area and check for ice build up. If the funnel is blocked with ice also pinch the ice maker fill tube for an ice block.
Should you notice ice in the funnel and the fill tube most likely the inlet water valve is bypassing water into the ice maker causing an over fill and ice build up condition. The remedy here is to replace the inlet water valve. They are NOT repairable. (Most of the time if the inlet water valve is bad your ice cubes will be fused into an ice block in the ice bin.) Also... if the ice maker fill tube is frozen full of ice... it can take up to 30 minutes using a hair drier to melt the ice as the insulation in the back of the freezer compartment keeps the ice maker fill tube from warming up enough to melt the ice in a timely fashion.

If you discover that the ice maker has over filled you can use a hand held hair drier and melt the ice in the ice maker.

If the ice maker seems to work fine then the freezer may be above 18 deg F. This is usually caused by ice build up on the evaporator coils as a result of either a defrost circuit problem or a slow running evaporator fan.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I have a GE refrigerator model # GSH25KGMB WW. It is a side by side with an ice maker and water dispenser. We have had it for about 9 years now. The ice maker hasn't been working right for about 6 or 7...

you could have several problems.

Since you mentioned your ice maker not working right - first check to see if your ice maker is hot (be carefull it can burn you if it is hot) - it is possible for an ice maker to hang in the heat cycle of the cycle producing excessive heat in the freezer. If this is the case unplug the ice maker and/ or just replace it.

The refrigerator gets it cold from the freezer so if the freezer is not working right, you'll soon notice it in the refrigerator side.

You can also check to make sure the evaporator fan motor is running(in the freezer) and the condenser motor(at the compressor) as well.

Also check the back panel of the freezer for excessive frost build up.

Ice build up

check that both cyclic defrost elements are working i dont think they are

Ice maker stopped working???

water valve or icemaker or make sure freezer is freezing check see if you have frost build up

Load noise coming from freezer

nothing to do with light bulb - noise is probably fan hitting ice that has built up. to check, remove back panel inside freezer and check for ice build up. melt off with a hairdryer and get back to me if i'm right

Water leaking from freezer down back wall inside fridge

Defrost water from a top freezer models exits the cabinet in the rear. This drain line may be plugged.
