Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

Sony KP-51HW40 I have started experiencing red lines coming across the screen only when turning on the unit and shutting down. As soon as the picture comes on, the red streak from left to right goes away and then reappears as I turn the unit off. It does not appear to have any problems with the picture while on. I see 4 blinking red lights when turning on. I have performed the auto alignment from the front of the set.

It could be retrace lines or according to the service manual, 4 blinks is that the vertical deflection has stopped. A how-to guide on the retrace lines as well as a link to the service manual is here: http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html

I had the same problem with mine 2 years ago (TV was 1.5 years old at that time) I had extended warranty on TV and it was fixed by Sony at no cost to me. Now yesterday I have another problem with it. All of a sudden screen went BLUE. No Sound either. It could be the CRT (That's what I read here) Out of luck this time. Will call local Repair shop (70 miles away) and see how much it will cost to fix it. Good luck.

Hi,
KP-51HW40 shuts off due to incorrect white balance and blue arch lines is an evidence of that incorrect white balance. I hope tv standby red light would flashing 5 times then 3 seconds pause and again 5 times when tv shuts down.
This is rear projection tv that has three picture tubes (red-green-blue) inside to generate picture that projected at front screen. These three picture tubes must be drive with correct drive voltage to produce good picture of each color.
Solution for your tv problem is Screen Voltage adjustment that can be done easily if you are handy with electronics stuff repair.
Let me know your expertise level to guide you more and if you feel unconformable by tv repair then local tv repairman will help you to adjust white balance in tv.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks.

I have a KP-51HW40. Everything works fine but the screen stays blue. What could the problem be?

if blue picture tube is blooming with retrace lines? it's because it developed internal short. you might try to turn down screen on blue picture tube. always mark with fingernail polish so you can return to starting position. J.D.W.

or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp.
the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.

Picture Quality

without seeing a picture I can guess that you may have a shorted green crt or the drive going to it has changed and you may need to turn down the g2 control for the green. If the tube is shorted or bad see what type of warrantee you have on the crts as some sets have two to 5 years. Good Luck
