One thing to try is hooking it up to another computer. There is a possibility that the hard drive failed or the controller for the external storage device has failed. If it is recognized on another computer then I would look at the manufacturer's website for an updated driver
Connect it to another computer to see if it works. If it does not work reseat the hard drive connectors in the hard drive case to make sure the connections are secure. If you cannot hear the hard drive spin when you connect the power then the hard drive maybe faulty.
Can you hear the drive spinning when you connect it to your computer? A spinning sound means your external drive is being powered by the USB from your computer - there are several reasons the drive is not being recognized.
If you are not hearing any spinning sound the drive could be damaged.
Does the drive get recognized by any another computer? If yes - check disk management and see if security is enabled on the drive. Also - check to see if there is a drive letter assigned to your external hard drive.
Sorry to hear that your drive is having trouble. When you start the drive, do you hear it turning?
Is this a external that you can remove the hard drive? You may try to power down the external, power it back up and shut down your computer. The conect the external and turn the computer on.
Let me know if you can hear the driver turning and it you can connect after going thru the process above.
Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.
I have had a similar problems with external drives that only plug into a USB port (no ext power adapter). It is very common that the power supply fed through the USB port is inadequate to power an external hard drive. Some enclosures have a external A/C input to resolve this. Also, some computers (motherboards) only have a select number of USB ports that are powered. Since this device is detected by your other computer and not on the new one, my next attempt would be to locate a USB hub with external A/C power. There is a good chance that this will resolve the problem. By the way, when you plug in the drive does it spin up?
