Holes in microwave wall due to arcing and contact with metal rack

There was arcing in my microwave oven which resulted in the metal rack starting to burn holes where it came into contact with the smooth finish on the wall of the microwave. Can the holes be filled in and the finish painted and will it be safe to use? Without the rack the microwave works normally despite the damage to the interior surface.

SOURCE: the interior surface is rusted and arces sometimes

The area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

If the cavity metal of the oven is cracked or split, you can use a small amount of steel-based epoxy such as JB-WELD to patch the crack or hole.

Once that dries thoroughly, you can sand it very smooth.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

It seems to be a problem with many microwave ovens that support the metal rack. Microwaves are not perfect for the metal rack and often causes pitting in the metal where it gets too hot. You can get the racks redone but looking for a new one may be cheaper. Some racks have a better coating on them.

  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.

    ELECTRICAL POPING SOUNDS

Hi there - I assume you have a rack in the Microwave. What happens is the rack due to putting something in and out of the Microwave some times wears against the back wall of the cooking chamber. As this happens it wears through the paint and exposes the metal casework.

You then get microwave arcing between the metal rack in the microwave and the cooking compartment casing which gives that spitting popping sound. I would say get some white model paint and paint over the scorched spot (as long as its not gone so far as to wear a hole in the case work).

Wait for it to dry and stick the rack back in and try again to warm up a cup of coffee or something and see if it stops.

Also if you pull the grill slightly forward in the holders towards the door and test it you may notice that it doesn't pop as much so I would paint it and pull the grill forward and see if you still get the issue.

    Best of luck.

    Microwave Arcing

The metal shelf that comes with most microwave ovens must NEVER come in contact with any surface of the cavity wall or arcing will occur. (this is why its is mounted on plastic clips). IF you are not using the shelf to cook multiple items (as most people don't)....Remove the shelf and store somewhere else until needed.
