Display The display of the etrex now has horizontal lines across all screens. The lines distort the display and make the unit difficult to use. Any suggestions?

Horz blank lines. First appeared after not using for some time.

Magellan Explorist 200 has horizontal lines through the entire screen which makes text appear distorted.

The problem is a physical one, not a software issue.
I assume some sort of loose connection(s) at the screen or failure in the hardware.
Have been reluctant to dis-assemble without advice/guidance from someone that has experienced and solved the problem.
Can not update software as no link cable comes with unit.
Recently attempted to construct one ( found directions online for home made version) but needed a different type of wire than I had available at the time. (cost to purchase one from Garmin prohibitive for my uses) I have repaired an unresponsive Dell Axim x5 screen by dis-assembling and placing tape over a burnt ribbon connector so I am not afraid to work on the unit provided some success is possible. Not knowledgeable enough to just look for something that might not be apparent to the untrained eye with the risk of damaging the unit further. The unit is usable just difficult to read.

This is not the "thin black line display only" problem

The screen is for the most part visible. Several horizontal rows of pixels are not on (black where it should be) but rather always off (no image) Some in groups others alone. Apparently random but always the same on all pages all the time, every time.

Update the unit software and please report back if this fixes the problem.

  • TO Lady Apr 02, 2008

Some of the Garmin Legends displayed this exact same problem (screen not displaying except for thin black line), and most were cured with a unit software update, this is why I suggested this. I can't help you with any internal tinkering. Maybe someone else can jump in here on this?
