how long have you been using this player? The problem should be from the lens (laser).
The weak lens is also what's making it skip/freeze.
Get
a lens cleaner and use it to clean the lens, but if the lens still does
the same thing even after using the lens cleaner, then it means you
would have to change the whole lens completely to a brand new one.
By so doing your player would play all Cd's with no problem at all.
The freeze ups normally happen before the red lights of doom and they are caused by the GPU and the CPU getting too hot and the soldering snaps off so they lose connection.
If you stop the heat build up you will be fine.
You can do this yourself using a good repair guide or you can send it in and they will fix it for you.
You need to open its cover and remove all flexible cables one by one and refix again. it probably has some clogg in connectors. pay attnetion to flexible cables as these are very delicated.
