Question about LaCie d2 Extreme (300790U) 250 GB Hard Drive

Lacie 250GB Drive

My Mac cannot see the Lacie 250GB Drive anymore. It doesn't show anything!! It sounds like it's working, but that's about all it does. No icon anywhere, no nothing... I've tried all the connections (Firewires/USB) and even tried other powerbooks and MacBooks. No warranty here, I am in Greece and I need the Data (it was a back). Any ideas? Thanx guys!

My LaCie Porsche doesn't show anymore.

You got a virus somewhere that knock it out. Sad to say, you will have to get rid of it and I only know of one way. Formatting the entire drive so you can use it again. If you are on a Mac, you may have picked this up from Microsoft who does this to drives they feel are clones.

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

My Lacie 250Gb ruged HD doesnt appears anymore on finder (LION ). I tried USB CABLE, FIREWIRE 800 but noithing happened. I tried to conect on a PC too lking on the Devices Manager and nothnig showed up....

It sounds like it has failed. If there is anything important on there take it to a data recovery expert who will charge a lot of money to attempt recovery of information. otherwise put a sledgehammer through it and trash it.

Blue light come on when plugged into laptop but does not show on laptop

Hello,
this drive is mainly a Network drive. To use it with the USB, if you have a PC, you will need drivers that can be downloaded from LaCie. If you have a MAC, there are no way to use the drive with USB.
If you have a Router at home, connect the drive to it with an Ethernet cable and then use the LaCie Network Assistant to access it. It is easier.

Can't find hard drive on computer anymore. Blue light constantly blinks on Lacie

My LaCie drive was not showing up on my Mac, and making a soft clicking sound ....I thought i was in for expensive data recovery and worse...But I met a guy who told me that La Cie have had a lot of trouble with their POWER SUPPLY and that i should try their customer service. I did, and after a round iof idiotic scripted replies I got to a smart CSR who sent me a NEW power supply. Hey Presto! The drive is back and working perfectly, no data lost!!!

I think the migration assistant (in the utilities file in your application folder) can transfer files direct via USB.

Lacie d2 external drive

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.

Lacie 250GB External Hardive to be used between a PC and a MAC

Be carefull when moving data from Macs to Windows etc. Your best bet would be to start again. It should work if you get your friend to put the data on the drive & copy it directly to your Mac. From there, you can safely copy data to the PC, but may have trouble accessing that same data after the PC has had it.
