The carrier that goes back & forth has a timing strip ( a plastic strp about 1/4" wide and goes the legth of the machine) If you open the top cover. put your hand in the hole fill twards the front of the machine and the top cover. now the carrier has a U shaped sensore that this strip goes through. 9 times out of 10 the stip has gottin bummped out of position. now you need to put that strip back in the sensore. hard to do with covers on. if look close at the top cover not that hard to take off.

Did you have a paper jam before this happened? If yes then the paper must have pushed the encoder strip out of alignment. You will need to turn off the printer and then push it back into slot to fix it. Let me know if you need more help.

Machine Error 50 either means that there is a loose object inside the machine (usually piece of paper), or that there is a mechanical error which would need you to have the machine sent to service.
The MFC has a mechanical problem, or a foreign object, such as a clip or ripped paper, is in the MFC.
Turn off the MFC's power switch, and then on again. If the error message continues, leave the MFC for several minutes and try it again.
