Lights work, LCD works but DVD won't start - seems there is no power to the DVD unit. DVD unit by itself works fine.
Can someone help? I have a service plan with BestBuy but turns out they are no good unless they still carry that unit - and they don't - so I am left to try to fix on my own - hopefully with the help of someone in the forum.

Re: No power to DVD portable unit
If you purchased an extended service plan from Best Buy, then it's not voided just because they don't carry the product any more. Mobile electronics change yearly; almost nothing that was sold two years ago is still available. If your local store won't help you, contact the corporate offices at 1-888-Best Buy. They may not be able to replace the unit with the same model, but they are legally responsible for either repairing it or replacing it with something comparable.

Sounds to me like you have a bad LCD. The DVD player itself will not play a disc if it is dirty, and it is digital data, so if there is something on the laser, it wont play or it will skip. Color generation comes from the components that control the LCD. It sounds to me like these were damaged or dropped and the cables that goto the LCD are either loose or the LCD itself is damaged.
If a portable, could be no charge or bad battery---output voltage is marked on the charger and can be tested with a meter---if voltage and battery are good (most units will work with the charger hooked even if battery is bad) then the unit has either a damaged jack where charger connects or has a power supply problem inside it.
The portable LCD screen panel that attach to the potable DVD player is dead. This DVD player is not repairable except u must replaced the whole LCD screen attachment lcd screen panel itself. Not worth repairing, will cost the same as the cost of a new unit.
I had same problem with a sylvania portable DVD: no disc.
After cleaning the laser didn't work, I took the unit apart, and found that there is a small gear that moves the laser back and forth across the disc.. The gear could easily be misaligned with a rough bump along the drive.. All I did was realign the gear to the center where the disc was. Inside, there was even a small lever to pull back on to do this..
I also noticed a small Ribbon cable connecting the laser to the main board. Again, seemed nimble. I detached the ribbon, cleaned the connectors with alcohol and reattached.
Happy to say, it works perfectly now. :). Good luck.
