The restore points in windows are generated automatically, in order to restore your computer to a previous date a valid restore point would need to already exist. You cannot manually assign a restore date.

SOURCE: System Restore...

System Restore is a valuable tool Microsoft released with Windows Me and substantially enhanced with Windows XP. (Windows 98 users can only gain this functionality with a third-party program.) Although it is not a backup utility per se, it performs a valuable backup function. System Restore monitors a wide variety of system and program files and creates a backup (called a restore point) of them at predetermined intervals. If a user experiences a problem with his system, he can roll back (restore) the system to a previously working state. By design, System Restore does not monitor data files. Consequently, you cannot use System Restore as a backup utility. Nevertheless, its significant value as a system backup tool makes it worthy of inclusion in this section.

Users cannot control many of System Restore’s parameters without manually making dangerous system edits, but they can adjust a few of its settings, such as how much room the system allots for restore points. In addition, users can manually create, invoke, and undo restore points.

In WinMe and WinXP, System Restore monitors and records changes to EXE (executable), VXD (virtual device driver), DLL (software and hardware drivers), and Windows Registry files. (Drivers are small programs that let system components communicate with a computer. The Registry is a database containing information about the system and user configurations and settings.)

System Restore periodically saves this information in a compressed archive and stores it on your hard drive. According to Microsoft representatives, System Restore makes an automatic checkpoint approximately every 10 hours your computer is running. The system must be idle for two minutes before it can create a checkpoint. If System Restore cannot create at least one checkpoint within a 24-hour period, it will attempt to create one at that interval. However, the system must also be idle for two minutes before it can create a 24-hour checkpoint.

Users of both WinMe and WinXP access System Restore from the System Tools menu (click Start, Programs [All Programs in WinXP], Accessories, and System Tools). When the main System Restore window opens, you will see two or three choices. The first two, Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time and Create a Restore Point, are present in all cases. The third option, Undo My Last Restoration, is present only if you have previously restored your computer to an earlier state. WinXP users have another option on the left side of the window: System Restore Settings. This option opens the System Properties dialog box you used in the “Give yourself room” and “Turn it off” sections.

My computer says configure updates and then it automatically turns off

This will be a long process of troubleshooting and may end up of restoring your computer to a factory settings. You can try the steps below:
First is boot up to advance boot options, to do this follow the steps below: -Turn off your computer -After pressing the turn on button start tapping F8 key until you see the Advance Boot Option. -Try choosing Last Known Good Configuration if it fail try Safemode, Safemode with networking or safemode with command prompt, if one is successful use system restore to restore your computer to an earlier date but if it fails you'll need to use your Operating System Disc to use the repair option.
Here's how to access system restore incase you're able to access Last Known Good Configuration, Safemode, Safemode with networking or safemode with command prompt: Windows XP: Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore select Restore my computer to an earlier time then select a bold date on the calendar and click Next on the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer. Then click OK on the System Restore Restoration Complete page.
Windows 7 and Windows Vista: Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore select Restore my computer to an earlier time then select a bold date on the calendar and click Next on the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows configuration, and then restarts the computer. Then click OK on the System Restore Restoration Complete page.
If you're on safemode with command prompt: At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER, System Restore window will pop-up then select Restore my computer to an earlier time then select a bold date on the calendar and click Next on the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows configuration, and then restarts the computer. Then click OK on the System Restore Restoration Complete page.
If all the steps above fails you need to use the recover disc or the operating system disc to do a repair on your computer. Revert back in case you need steps for using start-up repair.
Note: If the steps above and start-up repair fail there's no other option but to restore your computer to factory settings.

HOW DO I DO A system restore from within windows

Click on Start/Accessories/SystemTools/SystemRestore Once there, you'll be prompted to Create a Restore Point or Restore to an earlier point in time. Select Restore to an earlier point in time and you will see a calendar. Click on the date you would like to restore to and click Continue. It's important to leave the machine alone while it performs the restore action. Once done, it will automatically reboot. After rebooting, you will get 1 of 2 messages:
  1. Your system have successfully been restored or
  2. System restore was unable to restore your computer, no changes were made to your system
