I have an Epson 4870 scanner. It will not scan and makes a clicking noise when it attempts to scan and a red blinking light comes on. It was working perfectly last week but now it seems jammed or something. Can you help me fix it?
Your 'transportation locks' may have been engaged. (Check lower-left-hand-corner of the inside the scanner cover and the left-back side) See the manual: http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/pr48ph/pr48phrf/maint_3.htm

This solution was very useful. I had the same noise as described but the position of the tranportation lock was in the corrrect position. However I put it in the locked position and then back to the unlocked position and Bingo! the scanner started working again. So thank you very much for directing me to the possible problem. The transportation lock must have shifted slightly to cause the problem.

I guess there is nothing to fix maggi- unless these is a repair shop near by or a friend to take it to bits - but be warned I reckon you are into the next one.

I cannot thank you enough skymac...the lock was on inside the scanner, which I did not even notice was a problem. You are the best! I am so relieved not to have to return it to the vendor to be embarrassed over something I should have looked for. Again, many thanks. I hope I don't have to use you again, but if I do, I hope I remember that YOU are the one who hit the nail on the head...

You obviously don't know that much about scanners. The lid was locked; something I did not notice. However, thank you for attempting to help me through this problem.
