Scanner not scanning

I have an Epson 4870 scanner. It will not scan and makes a clicking noise when it attempts to scan and a red blinking light comes on. It was working perfectly last week but now it seems jammed or something. Can you help me fix it?

I cannot thank you enough skymac...the lock was on inside the scanner, which I did not even notice was a problem. You are the best! I am so relieved not to have to return it to the vendor to be embarrassed over something I should have looked for. Again, many thanks. I hope I don't have to use you again, but if I do, I hope I remember that YOU are the one who hit the nail on the head...

You obviously don't know that much about scanners. The lid was locked; something I did not notice. However, thank you for attempting to help me through this problem.

Your 'transportation locks' may have been engaged. (Check lower-left-hand-corner of the inside the scanner cover and the left-back side) See the manual: http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/pr48ph/pr48phrf/maint_3.htm

This solution was very useful. I had the same noise as described but the position of the tranportation lock was in the corrrect position. However I put it in the locked position and then back to the unlocked position and Bingo! the scanner started working again. So thank you very much for directing me to the possible problem. The transportation lock must have shifted slightly to cause the problem.

I guess there is nothing to fix maggi- unless these is a repair shop near by or a friend to take it to bits - but be warned I reckon you are into the next one.

My l 382 scanner cannot scan but its printing and it has two blinking red lights

Do you mean the Epson L382? If so, are the two lights blinking in an alternating pattern? Then the blinking lights indicate that one of the printer's ink absorbing pads are near or at their end of life. This has nothing to do with the scanner problem. See page 71 of the manual available on the product support page: https://www.epson.eu/en_EU/support/sc/epson-l382/s/s1506 . It's messy to replace the ink absorbing pads; most manufacturers want you to replace the all-in-one if the printer is out of warranty when these pads are full of waste ink.

Scanning requires two-way communication between the computer and the printer. Does the scanner work if you try to launch the scan from the computer? If so, then check if the Epson scan monitor is running and properly set up to respond to a button press on the L382.

If the scanner isn't found, what OS (including update/SP) is installed? The Epson support indicates that this unit has a TWAIN scanner driver; the software is available here: https://www.epson.eu/en_EU/support/sc/epson-l382/s/s1506 . Windows 10 has recently been modified to not work with any TWAIN driver. (Windows 11 also requires a scanner to use a WIA (Windows image acquisition) driver.) A work-around is to use the VueScan software: https://www.hamrick.com/ . The company will let you use the software for free to ensure that it works with your scanner. All scans from the free version will have a watermark added.

For other OS versions, how do you have the printer connected to the computer? If it is connected to a USB hub, try a direct connection. Try a new USB cable and a different USB port. (I inherited a scanner when a family member upgraded before checking if his USB hub was bad.) Make sure that the cable is under 6' (~2m) long. Double-check that you installed the Epson driver. Frequently, the basic driver (installed through Windows Update for example) will only work for the print feature of an all-in-one.

I hope this helps.

(I do use VueScan (free) for basic scans with that inherited scanner. It works well for my purpose since I am not scanning often.)

Hi, and thanks for your help. sad little noises on start up

Hello b3toed - sorry you're having problems; let's see what can be done.
First, there is a transportation lock on the scanner. (If you have a manual, it will tell you more about this.) Make sure it is unlocked.
Second, test the connection between the scanner and your computer -- make sure it's snug (well connected).
Third, if you were scanning a transparency just before this happened, make sure you've removed the reflective document mat.

After checking these things, turn it off - pause - then turn it back on. Best wishes for good results! -- ambssdor --

WANT TO DOWNLOAD A USER MANUAL FOR THE EPSON V500 SCANNER

Epson Perfection V500 installed. My computer recognizes it and diagnostic note says all okay. B ut when I turn on the power of the scanner, the grren light comes on in the front for about 15-20 seconds and then the scanner makes a loud grating noise and the green light turns orange and keeps flashing. No scan is attempted. TGhe noise sounds like something that should be moving can get started -- but nothing moves when you look at it. Should I take it back where I bought it?

Red light flashing on power button after attempting a scan, making a funny jerky sound like a jammed mechanism

Found online epson manual, found that lock tab on the back of the scanner had been bumped across to "lock" position.

Grinding noise

The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.

also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.

EPSON 350 scans 1/2 photo, makes loud clicking noise.

The chassis bends very easily on this model and the problem can be caused by scanner not being on a level base supported by all its feet.

Scanner won't scan full frame med format neg 2.25"x2.25"

ll you do is click on the arrow next to preview, and select normal instead of thumbnails. It took me a while to figure that out as well. Also, you will want to scan the film rightside up (opposite of what they say) and flip it in photoshop. When you scan it they way they say, the film touches the scanning bed, creating rings in your photos.
