I have an Epson 4870 scanner. It will not scan and makes a clicking noise when it attempts to scan and a red blinking light comes on. It was working perfectly last week but now it seems jammed or something. Can you help me fix it?
I cannot thank you enough skymac...the lock was on inside the scanner, which I did not even notice was a problem. You are the best! I am so relieved not to have to return it to the vendor to be embarrassed over something I should have looked for. Again, many thanks. I hope I don't have to use you again, but if I do, I hope I remember that YOU are the one who hit the nail on the head...

You obviously don't know that much about scanners. The lid was locked; something I did not notice. However, thank you for attempting to help me through this problem.

Your 'transportation locks' may have been engaged. (Check lower-left-hand-corner of the inside the scanner cover and the left-back side)
See the manual: http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/pr48ph/pr48phrf/maint_3.htm
This solution was very useful. I had the same noise as described but the position of the tranportation lock was in the corrrect position. However I put it in the locked position and then back to the unlocked position and Bingo! the scanner started working again. So thank you very much for directing me to the possible problem. The transportation lock must have shifted slightly to cause the problem.

Re: scanner not scanning
I guess there is nothing to fix maggi- unless these is a repair shop near by or a friend to take it to bits - but be warned I reckon you are into the next one.
OOOh dear and it was only the other day we were asked the same question about a Canon Anh here I said - check the transportation locks Just goes to show you need three heads with this computing lark.OOOh dear and it was only the other day we were

Open Epson Scan and select Professional Mode. Turn off the Auto Thumbnail option which if it is not on the main page then check the small drop down menus next to the Scan/Preview options. Once that is off do a preview and the in the preview window manually draw a marquee around the area you need.
Hello b3toed - sorry you're having problems; let's see what can be done.
First, there is a transportation lock on the scanner. (If you have a manual, it will tell you more about this.) Make sure it is unlocked.
Second, test the connection between the scanner and your computer -- make sure it's snug (well connected).
Third, if you were scanning a transparency just before this happened, make sure you've removed the reflective document mat.
After checking these things, turn it off - pause - then turn it back on. Best wishes for good results! -- ambssdor --
Epson Perfection V500 installed. My computer recognizes it and diagnostic note says all okay. B ut when I turn on the power of the scanner, the grren light comes on in the front for about 15-20 seconds and then the scanner makes a loud grating noise and the green light turns orange and keeps flashing. No scan is attempted. TGhe noise sounds like something that should be moving can get started -- but nothing moves when you look at it. Should I take it back where I bought it?
The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.
also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.
Are you getting an error/ red light on the scanner button when its on? when scanning from Paint ( File, then from scanners and cameras) does it freeze as well? or only when using epson scan? make sure cable is directly connected from the scanner to your computer, no hubs or anything.. keep me posted.
ll you do is click on the arrow next to preview, and select normal
instead of thumbnails. It took me a while to figure that out as well.
Also, you will want to scan the film rightside up (opposite of what
they say) and flip it in photoshop. When you scan it they way they say,
the film touches the scanning bed, creating rings in your photos.
