I can not get the red gun to align with either the auto or manual convergence modes. It will align in the center but towards the outside corners it is skewed and impossible to align. Any ideas? Thank you very much.

Re: Red convergence is bad.
The red convergence amp has probably failed and both STK's should be replaced, along with two or more of the 3.9 ohm fusible resistors in the circuit.
This is one of the more easily repairable units in the Samsung line because the convergence circuit is a separate board mounted up and away from the signal and deflection boards.
But if you're not too tech savy don't tackle this yourself.
Icz103 and Icz104 are both STK392-040. Check and possibly replace both FD101 and FD102 pico fuses (3.5 amp) and check all 3.9ohm/1w fusible resistors. At least two of these will be open when the corresponding STK failed.
Replace the STK's with Samsung parts or genuine Sanyo STk's not their JApan knock-offs which are VERY hard to tell apart. And use a good heat sink compound when mounting the IC's for proper heat dissipation.
If you have any questions let me know...
PS: Many Techs have taken to mounting fans on this board to cool the IC's... Fans have proven to reduce operating temps by as much as 40 degrees and extending the IC's life limit by as much as 50%...

These procedures are from the owners manual, go into menu and then picture quality and then:
The Convergence feature lets you adjust the TV’s three tubes. When the TV tubes’
images are precisely aligned, they create the color images you see on the screen.
Over time, the picture can drift out of alignment (this is normal). If your picture
seems fuzzy or has a yellow tint, using Convergence could correct this
misalignment. Only one convergence is needed for all inputs, regardless of the
Note: Make sure the TV has been on for at least 30 minutes (TV needs to
warm up for best results) before starting Auto Converge or Red/Blue
When you select the Convergence feature, a submenu appears with three options:
Auto Converge Automatically aligns the projection lenses to self-correct
color images. You’ll see flashing squares of color dance across the screen
(this is normal).
Note: After performing auto convergence, use the Blue Centering and
Red Centering menus to fine tune convergence in the center of the
screen, if necessary.
Blue Centering Aligns the blue and green images to fine-tune the picture.
Red Centering Aligns the red and green images to fine-tune the picture.
Note: The ability to change channels is disabled when adjusting the
convergence options. The TV must be tuned to a usable signal to
converge the picture.
I dont think you have problem with Red Gun.
One of your Convergence IC is faulty with 2 RK series Resisitor(Low Value) in Convergence
Amp Borad. If you changed IC look for RK series Resistor (may be 3.9ohm/2.7ohm)
Image at top and bottom edge very distorted.
Reheat all the surface mount solder points on the Small Signal Board. Then realign the set including convergence menu. To enter service mode: power off the set for 10 sec, then hold down Vol- and Ch- buttons for 10 sec. See this link: Alignment Procedure (pdf)
Also download the Alignment procedure pdf file. Hope this will help you. Please let me know if the information was of any help to you or you need further assistance.
Red Convergence IC bad.....small circuit board by itself up
above main boards..........replace both IC's for reliability...
STK392-040.........DO NOT USE GENERIC IC'S ! I use only
PANASONIC brand = no re-calls !!
Re-align when repair complete............T.
You have a componet out of tolerance in the green drive circuits, resistor or capacitor. If you have the service manual you should be able to take some raedings off the test points for the circuit and be able to track it down. I am enclosing a link where you can purchase the service manual for that set for 10.99. They will mail it to you unless you go back to the site and request that they email it to you by clicking on the contact us link. They also offer unlimited free support if you purchase your manual. I am one of their support techs. Hope this helps. Heres the link http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
It sounds to me like the convergence amps themselves have failed. Ic7001 and Ic7002, both are STK392-110 Sanyo built Ic's and not an expensive job for a qualified shop. When shopping around for a shop to repair it ask what they charge for replacement of the convergence amps in this unit. And take the unit to them to save pickup and delivery charges...
Have a great day!
