No HD picture

It seems the 32" Protron will not get a HDTV picture. We hooked up the composite cables coming from the HDTV tuner box supplied by Cox to another set and it gets the HD just fine. But this set jusy wont get them. The owner swears that he got them before but not now. We changed the source many many times to no avail. He gets the HD channels but they are not HD pictures. ???

Protron (now SpectronIQ) says HD only works if the component cables are in Comp2 on the set.

I need to know what hooks on the back of the TV into the mother/sister to provide regular TV. Some sort of converter? Which kind?

The Protron PLTV-32 only has an analog tuner (NTSC). So you need a digital to analog converter to watch OTA programming. A basic d-t-a converter will give you Standard Definition output (480i) (either on the TVs antenna in or the composite in inputs).

Since the TV can show a high definition signal (720p), you could also use an HD tuner set top box. However, these are significantly more expensive than the $40-70 SD converter boxes that were sold for purchase with the government coupon last year. Alternatively you can use a DVR with a tuner as your set top box (computer with a tuner card) to the VGA or DVI inputs on the TV.

I hope this helps.

Ok I have no skills when it comes to this stuff but can figure out the basics, i have basic cable now, and cant for the life of me figure out how to hook the cable up, i have a converter box already and...

OK! First, you have NO TUNER in that model. It's called a monitor. You have to use a cable box, satellite receiver or use an older style vcr with a tuner in it. With the vcr you won't see HD stations that broadcast in HD. You will see the old style analog.

How do I get the HD on this model? Which cables/hook up should I use? I do not have a cable box or set top box but if these are required, please let me know. Thanks!

Your unit is HDTV ready but is not an HDTV. It is capable of displaying HDTV only through the component inputs. Your tuner is analog NTSC and will not receive HDTV or digital.

You could get an HDTV picture using a Blue Ray DVD and hooking up the component connectors from the DVD to the TV.

The only other way would be to get an HDTV tuner with a component output and hook it up the same way, component out to component in, and hook the tuner input to an off air antenna (receiving HDTV) or cable or satellite with HD signals.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Can't find where to hook up tv coax.

As far as I can tell your TV is just a monitor. You would have to buy a separate tuner. I had the same problem with mine and found it was cheaper just to use an old VCR. I hooked up the coax wire up to the VCR and hooked the VCR to my TV with composite cables and changed my channel through the VCR. That will only work now if you're using cable because of the switch to digital. If you're using an antenna you will need a digital tuner.
