A week back I had a problem that our Maytag (Performa PAV2300) would not agitate, but it would spin. I had a look at the machine, remove the agitator pieces inside the tub, check the belt - really did not do anything, but the machine worked again for 6-10 loads. Today the machine would not spin anymore. The motor and the drum pulley (indirect drive) spins, the agitator shaft and tub does (hardly) not move. Nothing obvious, but I remarked that the tub spins faintly if set to the spin cycle - however without any significant torque. The 'spinning' was more pronounced after I removed the tub. I noticed that the motor is a kind of floating design, it cannot be bolted into place, so 'belt tension' cannot really be adjusted here . That appears to be odd ... Please , any suggestions are welcome !!! Frank
I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps

After taking the transmission out I could (and for the first time understanding how the machine works) I could determine that the brake for the spin cycle was not released when the pulley turned ccw. I adjusted the Thrust Bearing Assembly - really just taking it apart and back together - and the machine works again ... for now.
I am not sure how a worn Thrust Bearing Assembly looks like, this made a good impression (7 yrs old) ... so who knows.
