Hi, if I understood you right, you main concern is noise from the HSF (heatsink + fan). there are aftermarket HSF available with less noise yet higher fan rpm. you may want to try looking at http://www.tt-itbu.com/ for reference. Good luck. Kind regards.

Dell optiplex 760 tower fan noise problem

Its important to try and distinguish where exactly the noise is coming from the most typical example of this is the PSU fan (Power Supply Fan). The above also is very correct but its better to eliminate each point of failure.

My computer was in the shop for something unrelated to this problem and now that I have it back it (the cpu fan) sounds like I'm running a vacume it's that loud.

Hi Tim,

I can not say for sure that this is whats happening, but from your description, it seems logical.

After work is done on a computer, sometimes one of the ribbon (data) or power cables isn't completely secured. It can move around within the case, especially if it is transported (like back from a shop).

On occasion one of the cables comes in contact with a CPU fan (or any of the fans in a computer). If it does, the noise they make is horrendous.

Fortunately, the fix is easy. Get a flashlight and a screwdriver.
  • Open the box.
  • Switch the computer on
  • Locate the noise source if possible paying attention to the areas around the fans.
  • When you find it switch off.
  • If it was a cable just relocate it out of the way.
If this turns out not to be the problem, please comment back with more detail.

Best regards

Mike

My p4 system getting hot

see do one thing check the cpu fan whether it is working properly and is not producing any noise if it is then probably you need to replace your cpu fan with a new one also makke sure that your power supply fan and chasis fan is working as excess heat gets generated in the system they remove it
to change the cpu fan 1.see it will depend on what kind of cpu socket you have pin or pinless for pin-open the plastic clamp on the fan for pinless -unscrew the heatsink
2.remove the heatsink and replace it it will be much better if you replace the full heat sink with a new one .also don't forget to put thermal grease compound for effivient heat transfer in between the cpu and the heat sink contact generally these days heat sinks come with pre-applied thermal componds but still it is recomended to apply it firmly over the cpu before installing the heat sink on it
3.if you wish to install the old heatsink by just replacing the top fan then replace the fan and rub the bottom of the heat sink with a sand paper to make it even and free from dust and oxide apply thermal compond and install it on the processor .plug bak the cpu fan header cable . start your system it will stop overheating..

My gateway model gx70183 will not power on or off. Fan was making a lot of noise and the computer quit

hi there, there is already problem on fan, noise of fans could develop overload current on system and this system is protected by overload protection,it will trip off of your cpu.replace fan where ever it was located, there is fans on Power supply unit(PSU) ,also in processor, also in video card,On PSU you can replace PSU,try to find another PC which is not use,use temporary the power supply to check if ignore the tripping of your pc.Also clean the terminals of your memory card by eraser head of pencil, also with the video card.have a nice day, dont forget to fix my rate, thanks a lot.

I have a Lenovo A61 Thinkcentre that is about one year old. I am now hearing a fairly loud noise that comes and goes. When the system starts, the noise appears and lasts 10 - 20 minutes, then disappears....

Ok it still sounds like an fan. look for fans, one in power supply, one on cpu, one in case(frount or back), one on video card. before you start from cold unplug the fans that you can. and stop the one in power supply. then if there is no nosie you have to start pluging them back in till you hear the noise. **NOTE!!** don't run it long without fans!!( 40 secs) is long enough..

The fan in modem makes loud noises at times

Modems don't have fans.
I think you mean your fan in the computer makes a loud noise. Some computers have settings where the fan speeds up if you are doing a lot of things--making the computer work harder.
Some fans make noise just before they fail. Depends on the type of noise. If it's a sound that has a lot of rattling in it or maybe a high screeching sound, I'm thinking you'll be needing a new fan. Probably a CPU fan is the culprit. Also, fans on video cards often go bad--so you'll have to open the case and listen to where the sound comes from.

CPU fan problem

The stock fans that comes with systems are usually fairly poor in construction and tend to fail. I would have a look at the fans and heat sinks on this website for a replacement.

I hope this helps,

My CPU is making lot of noise especially when I'm using programs like Adobe reader

The CPU wont make noise unless its frying. So its either your hard drives, cd drives, or your fans.
If its your fans i sugest buying newer "Cool Master" fans that are powerful but less noisy

CPU Fan not running

If the system is a couple of years old, the fan may be clogged with dust so the blade can't turn; these little suckers don't have much torque.
You can find the little fan pretty easy since (unless you have a high-end video or sound card) it will be the only one actually on the system board.
If you know how to access the BIOS on your particular computer, you may have one that monitors the CPU temperature and tells you in degrees.

Watch the screen at bootup for a message about entering 'Setup.'
This will give you the key to press and it often must be done very quickly; it's often F1 or F2.
Some BIOS will call the function Advanced or System something.

Don't make any changes you don't understand and when you exit, don't 'Save' any changes.
