I have an old gas stove. No igniter.Lights with pilot light only. Stove top burners work fine.Oven does not ignite. The pilot lite is on.I smell no gas when I turn it on.

Pilot flame has to hit the thermocouple. If pilot is dory flame.will be weak and not reaching the thermocouple that tells the oven there is a flame and opens the burner. If the pilot is strong and no gas to burner than that thermocouple. ( 100% safely valve is worn out) replace that and you are good

Not light

check to make sure that the poilet lite flame is touching the tip or top of the thermocouple.
the pilot lite needs to heat up the thermocouple so that the thermocouple opens the gas to the main gas log. a cold thermocouple shuts off the gas to the main gas log or gas burner and a hot thermocouple opens the gas to the main burner.
the pilot lite flame must be touching the thermocouple to heat it up.
pilot lite orface needs to be clear to let the pilot flame gas through with enough pressure so that the little flame can reach & touch the thermocouple. Pilot lite gas feed tube must be clear to let gas through. Use compressed air or a fine sewing needle, or even carb cleaner to clear out orface hole and gas feed line to pilot lite.

important!! WARNING:
if you use carb cleaner, make sure all the carb cleaner is dry, soaked up with paper towell or kleanex tissue and blowed out with compressed air , because carb cleaner can burn just like gasoline; so any carb cleaner must be compleatly gone before you attempt to lite the pilot lite.

Will not stay on geep going out

Will pilot lit then burner and after it does this with just pilot on is that when it goes out. If this is what is happening ,pilot going out, then I would first change thermocouple. The thermocouple is usually on the bottom left hand side of gas valve. It will look like copper wire about as thick as a pencil lead. Remove burner cover and trace thermocouple line to where it mounts on pilot light assy.Thermocouple should be held in place by friction.Remove thermocouple from gas valve by lossenjng retaing nut, reach in burner compartment and grasp thermocouple at base.using small amount of force pull thermocouple from pilot assy and remove. You can get anew one at most hardware stores. Try to get one close to the length you have. A little longer ok. shorter no.Reinstall being careful when you tighten thermocouple nut as it is made of brass and valve body is made of aluminum.Very easy to cross thread or overtighten and strip threads. Make sure thermocouple is properly plased by pilot. Light piloy and hopefully this will tke care of it for you. THANKS

My pilot won't stay on i've tried several times.

Your problem is easy and frequent. The pilot light should heat up the thermouple which in return by the heat will keep the valve on for pilot light first and the burner light.

So either the pilot light is not reaching the thermocouple - this only if someone moves the pilot light

Or the thermocouple became weak and can hold the gas valve open - so replace the thermocouple with new one.

There is a very small possibility that the gas valve is faulty but you should replace the thermocouple in any case which is very cheap first and is the most possible cause.

My reddy 30 heater will not stay lit after starting, I have held the switch down for longer than 30 sec, but it just want stay lit

The thermocouple is what tells the gas valve to supply or not supply gas. Several things can cause the thermocouple to malfuntion.
1. pilot light jet is clogged and will not allow the pilot light to reach and heat the thermocouple. Repair by cleaning the pilot light jet out.
2. corrosion on the thermocouple which will also not allow the flame from the pilot to heat the thermocouple properly. Repair by sanding the thermocouple lightly with sandpaper
3. Thermocouple is bad and needs replacement.

Pilot light won't stay lit.

Ensure that gas is getting to the pilot , or you may have a devective pressure regulator.
If gas is getting to pilot and pilot is turning off, then you need to replace the thermocouple.
The thermocouple function is to turn off the gas if there is not enough temperature, so to prevent gas leaks if the pilot light goes off.
Near to the pilot light there should a part similar to a small metal tube directly in contact with the flame. Thermocouple is wired back to the gas valve.
When the pilot is on, and temperature is steady, the thermocouple will generate a small voltage that will keep the gas safety valve open. In case the pilot light goes off, the thermocouple will cause the valve to close. When you hold the pilot light button , the thermocouple will normally reach enough temp to keep valve open.
If the termocouple is faulty, it will turn off as soon as you release the igniter button.
Replacing thermocouple is an easy repair.

Call the number listed on the owners documentation to get the replacement part.

Gas oven dosnt work

the pilot light is there for 2 purposes. number 1 to light the burner and number 2 to heat up the thermocouple, thermocouple is a wire that the flame from pilot suppose to surround by fire. if the pilot is to low it will not reach the thermocouple. you can take the gas line that supplies gas to the pilot and clean it with a safety pin or a small needle. you can test the thermocouple by heating it up with a blow torch on low heat, get it red hot and then turned on the oven. if the oven works clean the pilot, if the oven do not work, replace the thermocouple if separate from safety valve. if thermocouple is part of it replace the safety valve.

The thermocouple or gas valve needs to be replaced. Start with the thermocouple.

Good Luck
