1986 Thunderbird, cd player keeps cutting off. Is this power problem?

I have a 1986 Thunderbird. About a year ago, I went to a local car stereo business that installed a cd player into my car (Clarion cd player, basic speakers). My problem all along is that the radio keeps being shut off when playing past a certain volume. I adjusted several things with the cd player settings that seemed to help at first. HOWEVER, if my headlights, heater and cd player are all going at the same time, it tends to shut off the cd player and restart it (usually when I'm braking or stopped). Does this sound like a power problem (like I need a stronger alternator?) or is this a wiring problem within the cd player installation? Thanks

No that sounds like the player is just old and most likely needs the tiny drive belts replaced.

You may have to have your stereo "matched" to your car. Your local dealer can usually do this for you

1986 Thunderbird troubleshooting

there are 2 fuses boxes in cab and 1 in engine bay
we test the fuses, we dont change them out willy nilly.
even better, is to measure the voltage at at the radio.
the power pin is 12vdc, keyon
if not the fuse is blown or the wire is cut.
end story.
my guess is car wiring was hacked long ago with stereo upgrades
or other hacks, (alarms,etc)
old cars are like that, hacked.

Have 1986 thunderbird 2.3 turbo car runs but when you get on gas cuts out ease up runs fine car has sit for about 5 yrs

this sounds like a fuel flow or supply problem.you may also have a sensor problem that controls the turbo operation under different throttle and load positions for proper operations.i`ve seen turbos impellers seize or not turn freely.these are different areas to check into, note parts for these turbos and supercharged t-birds are hard to find when it comes to components as they only made them for about 3 years.

86 thunderbird... quit while driving.. traced it down to no fuel ... pump is good .. replaced relay ... still not engaging pump ... next step ?

Did you replace the fuel filter. Did you check the fuse? How do you know the pump is good? Just because you hear it running does not mean it is pumping any fuel. A fuel pressure test will verify if the pump is indeed good. If it is the OEM pump I would bet it has failed. It is rare for a pump to last 25 years.

I have a 2001 SS Camaro. When I start my car and the stereo is on, most of the time the stereo cuts off/ turns off but the background lights are still lit and the windows will not work during the outage....

Yes there may be too many amperes being drawn from your battery. The radio will not work if there is not enough voltage and current. The same with the electric windows. Check the state of your battery, Your local mechanic can do this very quickly. Ask to look at the voltage reading when he checks the battery and the voltage should somewhere around 13.8 volts. If the battery is fine you will need to invest in an amplifier to run your stereo as this may be the root cause of your problems. Too many speakers draw alot of current and can play havoc with the cars electronics,

Good luck

If you have 2 blue wires, disconnect the one that you connected and connect the other. I belive that is what I did years ago in My Grand Cherokee with Kenwood Excelon reciever.

CD changer problem disable play or reject CD function

I sould checkyou phone book to see if there is a bussiness that repairs car radios and cd players.
Other wise you should look into a new cd player at a local electronic store that sells car radios and cd players. The last option is to go to the dealer and order another one.
