My computer makes the "connection chime" when I plug in the Panasonic PV-Gs31 thru the firewire (not usb) but the computer will not recognize that anything is connected--I'm hoping to do a direct-to-dvd project using Sonic My DVD--but won't work. Strange thing is, it used to work last time I tried (about 8 months ago). Don't know what I have changed.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
I had the same problem, eventually I had to restore my pc from a recovery point and somehow it was fixed along with a bunch of other issues. Somehow you need to be able to flush the USB port.
--this is not a solution, just an observation--
You are not alone in this concern. I have the same model which has been used right along and all of a sudden it is not being recognized as a capture device in Windowss Movie Maker. We have tried on four different computers and have downloaded the newest drivers still with no results.

Hi There, Your camera does have a firewire output to go to your computer. To send video to the computer, you need to have a large or seperate hard drive. You also need to have some editing software: and not the ones that come with your computer. Something like Pinnacle Studio, around $149.00 USD. This is the easiest software to use for non professional people like us.
Thanks, me cicmo
Hi There, You need to use your firewire cable from the camera to the computer. You need to have a large or seperate hard drive to accomadate the video. You need to have editing software, and not the ones that came with your computer, but something like Pinnacle Studio 09 which is pretty easy to use. About $149.00 USD.
Hope this helped. mr cicmo
I can't find any reference to a PV-GX31 model, BUT if your camcorder is a PV-GS31 MiniDV model, then you need special software for it to show up on your computer screen. Panasonic supply the software to show and edit still shots (through your USB cable). But if you want to show and edit movies, then you need a firewire cable, a firewire connection on your computer to connect it to, and most importantly some editing software. PCs are pretty slack in this area, so you should use a mac!
I called Panasonic directly today & asked about the Vista driver
for the GS31. No such driver exists, but they are trying to develop a
driver specifically for Vista users of this camcorder. Finally the
mystery is correctly answered & solved for us Vista owners!
Here is a link to the latest manual for your Camcorder. Check out page 42. This may help.
You may need to re-install the software o your computer for the camera inteface.
Have a Great Day!!
