If it is an old tape which has been used before, there may be creases caused where the pinch wheel pressed against the roller. Try again with a brand new tape. If this is not the issue, he a service is called for.
I don't remember where I read it, but somewhere like this site. Just as you start the play back, give your camera a bump with the heal of your hand. This has worked a couple times, and the issue seems to be with just the metal tapes. My husband was a bit appalled until it worked. It might not solve the issue long term, but I was wanting to recover baby footage so I wanted to just get it done.
Tracking is very sensitive on hi-8 tapes in LP mode. This recorder will record and playback in LP mode. It is however recommended that if you record in LP mode that you use the same camera to play it back, that it was recorded with, or you might have problems.
Also from what I can find online, the TR427 is just an video8 camera not a Hi-8 so if you are trying to play Hi-8 tapes on it, it won't play right.
This was often caused by mixing brands of tape. Do not use head cleaners more than absolutely necessary. More than half a dozen times or so, and heads are toast.
Use quality tapes of the same make/length, from new, and you will be fine. (the coatings on the tapes vary, and can/did interact with each other.)
check on ebay for a back - up camera ( that model
has a good history ) and / or get an estimate on
yours , for a price comparison ;
if the main board has failed ( corrosion , etc )
repairs will likely exceed replacement cost ;
