I have a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem. My cable company is Cox. My computer is an iBook G4 (Apple). I am frequently disconnected from the internet. The first solution tried: disconnect a FON router. Didn't help. Second solution tried: change splitter for internet & TV. Didn't help. Third solution tried: Cox cable man came out and said the modem was shot. These guys are always trying to sell you something new (and expensive) so I'm suspicious. He checked that the signal was strong coming into the house and at the cable to the modem. He checked all connections. Do I need a new modem or is there a fix?
Toshiba 1100 modem are no longer compatible with any service providers anymore. The reason for this is Toshiba quit making cable modems and no longer supports them. Since they no longer support their modems, they don't write firmware to make them DOCSIS 2.0 compatible and since most service providers use 2.0, your DOCSIS 1.1 modem will not function correctly. Actually what is really happening is the 1100 modems cannot correctly decipher the 2.0 and are constantly changing their transmission power levels. You definitely need another modem, and if you are using Cox, ask about their refurbished ones for about 20 bucks.

That's a hard one to say, you won't know unless you purchase a new modem and install it. But I have seen cable modems just quit, so it does happen.

I have the same exact problem. I was using a Belkin router, which I thought was the problem, replaced it, and nothing. It does still happen, just not as often. Went from a disconnect time of about every 2 hours to about ever 10 hours maybe. I have looked everyone for a solution, and havent found one. I blame Cox(Now Suddenlink)'s crappy service.
When this problem does occur, I just unplug the power cord to the modem, and plug it right back in. The internet should work once you do that.
