I have a HCR-SR1 and it suddenly starting to behave strange. It closes the lens cover when it is turned on and open it as I power it off. In other words it probably is a software tag that is out of sync with the mechanical position. The message is:
Lens Cover not fully open. Turn power off then on.
It disappears after a few seconds and instad displays:
Cover is not open.
When I turn it off it opens the cover and give the following message:
Lens cover is not fully closed.
I have tried turning power off/on many times. I have also tried removing battery and even pressed the tiny reset-button.
This has happened a couple of times before. Both times it suddenly goes back to normal after fiddeling with the camera for hours.
Is there an firmware fix or is it a mechanical problem?

Re: Lens Cover not fully open
It sounds like a problem with the firmware in the camcorder itself. As an authorized Sony repair person, I have gotten no technical bulletin on this model. The firmware is preloaded into the microprocessor IC. You will need to have this unit looked at by an authorized Sony repair center who specializes in camcorder repairs or send the unit to a Sony factory service center. good Luck

You need to go in and physically open the lens cover. 1. take out batteries 2. remove memory card + the small phillips screw. 3. remove the 3 remaining exterior screws. carefully with a small flat tip screwdriver pry the plastic halves slowly. eventually they will come apart. 4. at the bottom remove the small ribbon cable. 5. disconnect the mini motor wire, black and red. 6. unscrew the motor drive for the lens cover and then open the lens. 7. purchase a new lens cover motor. 8. If your screen still says turn off , then press menu and delete some files. good luck ! Work Slowly and carefully and ground your hands to a pipe somewhere before working on the unit. the static electricity could ruin the circuits !
The lens cover of PSA60 opens along with the move of the objective lens. Normally the camera will sound an error beep when the lens does not end to the end position -- the lens cover is also not fully opened. In reverse, the lens will be retracted when the camera is switched off. The "shutter" (outside lens cover) might have something stuck inside the blades or other mechanical parts that prevents the lens cover fully closed. Try to blow with a clean air (no hot air - because it can damage the electronics or plastics). Or maybe the blades are probably not flat that may create resistance on the surface. Try to flatten the blades by hands. Or maybe the mechanical systems need to be calibrated (by Canon service center). My suggestion, try to exchange/trade-in your PSA60 with the latest model at the Canon center, because I have done it last year (trade-in with PS S5IS).
I have a solution posted in doc "nikon s5 s6 lens cover error repair.doc" uploaded on site http://www.esnips.com/web/papputatiyasStuffIt will be helpfull for you. Its is a step by step solution with images. RegardsMukesh
OMG! I had the same issue and blew on the lens. To easy to be true, but it worked! I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I turned the camcorder on and off several times, and it worked every time! Sure beats the $341 Sony was going to charge to fix it!!!!
sand in the mechanism? Or other kind of wearout...
If the lens cover does not open completely due to some mechanical problem, the camera will not work (there are switches to detect cover full open and full closed).
Probably needs some repair, cleaning or replacing the cover gears
