I go to the control panel, and select Oregon trail 5th edition. When i try to uninstall it, it says, 'Oregon trail 5 is in use. The product cannot be uninstalled while it is running. Please close the game and try again.' And the game is closed.

It might be running in the background. Shut down and turn the machine back on (not a restart). If you get the same error, press ctrl+alt+delete and open the task manager. Look for it there and see if it is running in the background. That should fix it.

SOURCE: it wont work

You need to update the OREGON5.INI file with the following:
rsrcpath=C:\Program Files (x86)\The Learning Company\Oregon Trail 5
After this, it works perfectly!!!

See if this could help and please reply if it does.

I can install Oregon Trail 5th edtion but it won't run. Why not?

This game is fairly old, and very likely may be incompatible with newer Operating Systems. Be sure to check the label on the box.

you should erase it from the computer and reinstall if it doesnt work look in the back of the game box and there it says the expectations that the game needs and if you dont meet one of those expectations the game wont work

Oregon Trail 5th Edition installation fails at 13% with a "Severe" pop-up message that says: Cannot Create Directory Current File:*.* I am running the installation with the administrator account on Windows...

I found the answer to this problem. The problem is the install tries to write to files in the c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents directory. For some reason, that directory had lost the ownership. Try searching for "my documents access denied". For XP home, I had to boot in safe mode, then take ownership of the directory. Once I did this, the install could write to the directory and it installed!
