Mine wouldn't go right and after checking the ribbon cable, it still wouldn't work. I took alcohol and put a small amount on a cotton swab and worked it into the switch. I exercised the switch probably 20 times and they blew out the alcohol. Waited an our to check it out and it worked. I've been using it the rest of the day and it is working good so far.
I have had the same problem on occasion. Usually turning the unit off and starting it up again fixes it, OR using the side toggle button to page through a screen or two, then try the thumbstick. I'm not certain it's a hardware problem or a software one - I won't take the unit apart. It hasn't happened to me in a while.
Through this site I just realized I was running an outdated version (2.33) downloaded 3.9 moments ago (thank you!).
Guess we'll see if that thumbstick problem goes away with the upgrade.

For the Etrex Legend you can click the page (top right hand) button till you get the main menu, select setup then display. Point the click stick down until the bar on the left is highlighted. You can then move the bar up and down until you get the contrast you want. You could first try clicking the square near the top right and selecting restore defaults, but if the default contrast is not to your liking then you can change it using the bar. It is probably similar on related models such as the Venture or Vista, if in doubt check your manual.
I have had this problem occasionally and if you use Restore Defaults it appears to fix it. Using the front button go to Main Menu, Setup, System, move left and press the button button. Before I did this I just used to leave it a few weeks and it would suddenly be working again. HTH Peter
The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.
The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version. If this solves your situation, please come back and rate our answer. Thankyou.
Did you all hve the same unit, ie Garmin Legend. the newer units, ie Legend HCX can receive signals in deep canyons and heavily treed forests. Mine can even receive a signal when inside the glovebox of my truck!
I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.
Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
