Gmini 402 camcorder freeze/format

It froze up, so after the battery died, i started it up, it said "Read Access Error" I then click format and asks me if i wanna do it from the computer or if i just format it on its on. No matter what I do, it doesnt format. When its plugged into the computer, it doesnt recognize it as a GMINI 402 or ARCHOS DEVICE, it says removeable storage and in properties says that there is no memory availabe on the hard drive, it doesnt even recognize the hard drive. when i try to add the updated firmware, it says that it must be formatted but it wont let me. I really need to fix this problem, i do everything w/ this camcorder and i dont have an extra couple of hundred dollars sitting around. So if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, please let me know, you dont even know how much I would appreciate it. Thank You.

Well.. I had the same problem and did a lot of "trial and error' techniquies. I tried to format using the DOS utility which didnt work. So I waited until windows recognised it as a storage device (not Archos Gmini) and tried copying some files from the PC to Gmini (which will not get copied over). Then disconnect and switch off the Archos Gmini. Now power on the Archos Gmini and it will start off on Arclibray updates and the system will start off normally and home screen appears. Now get into Archos GMini setup and format it. Format will be successful and the next time you start up gmini, it will work fine. Lemme know if the solution worked for you.

If you have problems with the file system on your Gmini you can try to fix it using the DOS utility, check disk (chkdsk). Do the following; ? Make sure external AC adapter is powering the Gmini. ? Quit all running applications. ? Properly connect the Gmini to your computer ? Wait patiently (up to 5 minutes) for Windows XP to show the local drive as mounted. ? Open a DOS window. Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. ? At the prompt, type chkdsk e: /f. Use e: or f: or whatever drive letter is representing your Gmini. The /f argument tells the program to automatically fix errors. ? Be patient, this may take a while. ? When it is finished, exit the DOS Window and properly disconnect the Gmini from your computer. Try using the device now and see if makes any difference. This method should help to fix any disc errors that have occurred within the FAT and help your PC recognise it again. If you have more problems, try formatting it using a DOS prompt. You MUST make sure NOTHING is trying to access the disc before you can format it - this includes windows explorer.

Try turning the unit on with the hard drive disconnected. When I did this (mine had a similar problem) a screen came up and asked me if I wanted to format. I plugged the hard drive back in and reformatted. I had to format twice, but after that it worked fine.

Gmini hard disk reading problems

My Gmini XS202s did this twice both time cause the battery went flat while moving files across (I should always charge device while connecting to PC)

First time I reformatted device as FAT32 using fdisk (Windows formatting tool should do same)

Then downloaded latest AOS and copied to root directory. [get AOS from http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=gb&lang=en]

second time I ran mkdosfs /media/disk (disk was mount point for gmini). This seemed to fix the device and I lost about 20 files. but better than reformat.

If the drive is ticking, it suggests the actual HDD is dying. You can try the following to see if you can fix any disc errors through your PC, however if your PC does not recognise a drive has been attached you may be unable to do anything other than have it repaired elsewhere.
