Question about Nikon COOLPIX S5 Digital Camera

Nikon Coolpix S5 lens cover won't open

New Nikon Coolpix S5 used very lightly for the past couple of months - hasn't been dropped or dunked - battery is fully charged - working just fine until recent attempt to turn it on - lens cover seems to be stuck closed - no sounds being made (i.e. no grinding or any other mechanical sounding effort), but orange light next to lens cover will come on as long as I'm holding the on/off button down...???

My coolpix S5 lens cover won't close. When i turn it on there is a wurring noise and it says 'Lense error'. The camera has been treated kindly and i have had it for just over 2 years now. Does this signify the demise of my beloved camera???

mine doesn't always open - so one day in frustration I got a very fine pin and prized it open. It has done the trick any time it has gotten stuck since!

Hi Debscan, My 1.4 year old S5 developed the same problem and after checking out various websites I get the impression that it is a common one to these cameras. I found that if I put the camera on a level table and then turn it on (and off) 3 times the lens cover would open further with each try. On the third turn-on the lens cover would drop fully with a definite "Click" and the camera would work. The next time I shut it off, the lens would not close properly, but the same "Third times the charm" routine would always work. This may only delay the inevidable final crash of the camera, but it might get you a few more pictures out of it.

Hi , The lens cover error is because the stepper motor in the camera is unable to open the lens cover.
