This sounds like it is a heat related wiring issue with the screen and the connector to the screen. Best to take this in to an apple genius bar and show them the ipad when the line is present. They should be able to then replace the screen for you.
tha't an easy task to handle
See the pictures below
if your whole screen shows an image and the cracks are in front of it then its just a cracked digitiser
if you dont see the whole image and tyou see horizontal and vertical line or an image like spilled liquid then your Lcd is also cracked too
this is a broken Lcd (the screen is distorted by the lines or no picture at all)
this is just a broken digitiser (the screen below the broken glass works fine )
You will probably need to replace the screen. Go to youtube and do a search for your laptop model and 'screen replacement'. It will show you how to replace it. You can but the part online from Amazon.com. On most laptops it's pretty easy!!
In my tablet, in settings, under 'Developer Options' in 'User Interface' there is 'Pointer Location' which is a screen overlay which shows current touch data. To me what you are seeing sounds exactly like this function when it is selected. Hope this is the answer you need.
It sounds like it was maybe dropped, or recieved some kind of physical trauma. The Lines on the screen sound like they could be from a loose electrical connection between the screen and the mother board, and that may be why you need to apply pressure to the back of the device. your best bet would be to return the device to sharper image for repair or warranty work. Sounds like you're screen is broken. If you have text at the bottom but not at the top and lines on the screen, it's definitely broken. Amazon should give you a replacement. If you're out warranty, you can get the part at Kindle Repair and there is a guide that shows you how to open a kindle and install parts at Kindle Repair Guide.
