Brother Intellifax 1840C

The fax machine is displaying the message that there is no ink catridge. It has four ink cartridges, three of which are color cartridges. I have reinstalled the same four cartridges several times. They all have ink in them and the machine won't go through the protocol. All we need is black. Is there any way to bypass printing in color and go to black so that the faxes which are coming in can print out? The problem is with one of the color cartridges. I tried switching around color cartridges in case it was a simple connection problem. I did try powering the machine down and back on again which didn't make any difference.

Brother Intellifax 1840C the only one thing you can to do is stick masking tape around the cartridge, there is an switch, when you take off the cartidge the switch is off, when you put it on the switch is on, this is out = "off" and in= "on", do the same with the other colors.
greetings.

Unfortunately there is no way to bypass color printing. If you are not using genuine Brother color ink cartridges then that may be the problem. Brother is very particular about which cartridges you use. If you are using Brother cartridges then it may be that the one that is not working is simply a dud. Try returning the cartridge and swapping it out for a new if you can, otherwise buy a new one. If it still does not work then the problem is on the machine side. If you have had the machine for less than a year then Brother can do warranty work on it.

I have a brother intellifax 1840c (which is great, by the way). I need to change the ink cartridge & have no idea how to get into it. Is there a latch or button to help open it? Please help.

1 Close the document support and the document tray.

2 Lift the top cover to the open position until it locks securely into
place. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the
LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Open Cover.

3 Pull the ink cartridge hook toward you and remove the ink
cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

You can find the procedure on changing the ink cartridges in the user manual, page 12-25.

Brother 1840c -problems after changing cartridges

If you are using new cartridges, the problem is in the sensors. The ink sensors get dirty and malfunction. Remove the ink cartridges and thoroughly clean all the surfaces, Allow to completely dry and replace the cartridges. This should cure your problem.
p.s. I usually use alcohol on a Q-Tip to clean

No cartridge

A “No Cartridge” error message on 1960c products is caused by third-party (non-Brother) ink cartridges
leaking ink onto the Ink Sensor PCB and shorting out the cartridge sensor. In order to resolve this issue, a new
Ink Sensor PCB will need to be installed.

Brother IntelliFAX 1840C says to change yell even though its full

Your machine did not recognize the new cartridge. Remove the yellow, count to 10 then replace it. The machine will ask "did you change the color yellow?" Select yes by dialing "1" - if after the cleaning cycle "near empty" still appears, you need to contact Brother for repairs. You can safely use the machine until "INK EMPTY" appears.

I have changed all of my ink cartridges;but the black mode will not print, the color is working fine.

After replacement of each ink cartridge the machine will display "Did you change?" for each colour. If one or more do not come up with this message you may have a problem.

Check each cartridge for the black flag is moving up and down with the liquid in the ink cartridge. If it stuck firmly tap it on a table until it is freed.

Another problem if the black sensors in the ink supply unit are pushed back it may not read the cartridges. If visably they look pushed back (usually only two) I can let you know how to correct.

Finally the mainboard in the machine can fail causing some inks not to read but you can not resolve this yourself.
