I can't get my scanner capabilities to work on this model. I went to the Samsung site and downloaded Smart thru 4 and when I try to scan it tries to do a prescan but after a long time comes up with an error message saying "cannot detect device "Samsung SCX-4100". I have a usb from the printer to the laptop and made sure it is in the right port and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have Microsoft Windows XP if that helps to know.
I just fixed this problem for my computer. Try installing the scanner driver. You probably have the printer driver installed but the scanner driver is needed for Smarthru

I bet you haven't installed the scan driver. For the system to work completely; you need the print driver, scan driver and smarthru4.
Once you install the scan driver (available on Samsung website); the issue will go away.
Also, another trick; instead of using the smart thru - which is kind of awkward, download Picasa 3 and if you have installed the scan driver correctly, you can use Picasa to import the scans by controlling the printer. It also allws for some other tweaks that are not so easy to get to in Smart Thru.

Got problem with my SCX-4300. printer works well, but scaner wont work. Smarthru says that cannot detect the device. so i used another way to scan my docs. Start>Devices and printers>then selected Samsung SCX 4300 series and there is an option "Scan a document or picture" Click here and then you will be able to scan your docs or pics.

Can you make sure that you can print from your computer to the samsung? this will conform that the computer and the printer are connected correctly.
also you could try using a different cable and make sure that the USB cable is not too long (3mtrs is the max)

I did that too - I apparentely never installed it when I first got the printer so I just downloaded the latest version over the weekend from the Samsung site. And I should clarify on the suggestion earlier that I don't have another printer cable to try but just made sure the one attached now is not more than 3 mtrs. One more thing the message I wrote had one word wrong. It said cannot OPEN device.... not can not DETECT....not sure if that changes anything. Ugh...
