Xbox 360 elite not reading disc

I've had the 360 elite for about a year now. I just started having problems with it. It will not read any disc I put in it. It keeps saying that it is unable to read disc. what could be the problem?

I was recently playing a game and than all of the sudden the screen went nuts and it froze up. So I tried watching a movie on it, and the graphics were acting funny and than did the same thing. I practically went nuts because my xbox isn't even 2 years old yet! I don't want to have to buy a new one and I don't want to have to send it in, but its so aggravating to have to deal with this problem in the first place.

Your cache might be full. On your dashboard go to My Xbox, select System Settings then Memory. On whatever memory device you are using hit the Y button (not A) and select Clear System Cache. This problem is a bit like when your temporary internet files on your PC gets full to the point where it can no longer allow for any more information which causes your internet to slow down significantly or to not load any pages at all. It also works like ram. Basically if your cache is full it drags down your console and can cause other problems like not automatically signing in to your profile though you have your console set up to do so. In using this solution you will temporarily lose your gamer points but you will regain them the next time you log in to your gamer tag. Another thing you will lose is any updates you have installed but you will be prompted to redownload these. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, either your lenses in your 360 have worn out, or the lasers in the disc reader have short circuited. Both outcomes require you to either send it in to Microsoft, or buy a new 360.

There's a time for all of them =(

Try using a Lens Cleaning CD (available at good electronic and game retailers)
If not, it may be that the lens is damaged... call (1-800-4MY-XBOX) and talk to a XBOX Representative

Xbox 360s makes a weird sound when it reads a disc and shuts down

Sounds like the drive is very dirty, or going out. Try cleaning it, or just replace it.

Xbox 360 Elite won't read disc

Is it every single disc you have or only 1? If it is every single disc then your disc reader could be dirty or dusty. If it isn't every disc you need a new disc. Try DVDs as well. Make sure to try 5-10 other discs. If you play one disc way to much and the system does't get proper cooling you can actually burn the CD sometimes. It is very very rare but it is a possibility. If none of these things solve your problem then you need to look into a new console because it means you disc head reader is shot and needs to be replaced but that costs twice as much as a new 360 elite.

My xbox 360 elite keeps on saying open tray even though i have a game in i would open it than it would read for about 2 seconds than say open tray again and i dont want to take it apart to void my warranty

The warranty on the XBox 360 is ONE YEAR. If you have had it for more than a year, there is no more warranty to be void. You can open it.

The XBox 360 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser (and/or other components in the drive) will eventually burn out. The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the games will stop reading altogether and you will get an "OPEN TRAY" message when you put a disc in and close the tray. What this means is that the XBox 360 thinks that there is no disc in the system.

Why wont my xbox 360 elite read discs? i put disc in and it comes up reading and then open tray

My only questions are does the console say the discs are damaged in any way? and is the console standing up right?
If the discs are scratched in any way then that might cause the 360 to not read the disc and sometimes having a console play the disc upright (example of upright 360) for a long time can cause dis function when trying to play discs, so try playing the discs with the console on its side (side example) These are my solutions to the problem but you can try these: Solution 1 Solution 2

CoD4 disc won't read.

how many times have you tried to play the disc?
the 360 is prone to many disc read errors, and most of the time if you just keep trying to play the disc it will work. xbox recognized the problem, and with the new dashboard update you can install games to your hard drive which minimizes the time the disk is spinning, which in turn minimizes disk read errors.

if it doesn't play, I would deffinetly try getting a new copy before sending in the console. getting a new copy is just a trip to the store, sending in the console will take a month.
