Most likely the isue is too large plug gap. The proper gap is 1mm, set the gap first then if you still want to check coil output take the plug out hold the base of the plug to the cylinder head pull the start rope and look for a spark. If you can't see a spark seperate the plug base from the cylinder with your finger pull the cord, if it hurts stop pulling the coil is good! If you dont feel the shock then the coil may be defective however there is a couple of electrical conections to check first. If you already have access to the coil and have an ohm meter check for a low resistance (below 10 ohms) across the coil wires.

Echo gas weedeater. Starts, runs until heats up - maybe five minutes - then won't start again. I've changed the carburetor, spark plug, fuel filter and lines, gaskets, new fuel with echo gas oil. Still...

Classic sign of coil failure. Run it until it cuts off then test the coil. Most likely 0 resistance, complete open circuit. This is common, coil can't be repaired, only replaced. It is a simple fix, and echo trimmers I believe are worth the cost of coil to repair. Plenty of youtube videos on how to do this repair.

Check the coil with a spark checker immediately when this happens. You probably have a week coil.

How to test a coil

Best way to test is with a 3-point spark tester. It will show if you have spark and if you have enough spark. Most dealers will have.

My weedeater has no spark at all

If there is no spark then I would suggest checking out the plug wire for cracks or breaks If there is none present then the ignition coil could be finished Take it off take it into your small engines dealer and get him to test it.

It keeps stalling after only a few minures

Suspect Ignition Coil is failing under heat.
To test this, take the unit outdoors and have a fire extinguisher handy. Start and allow unit to run until it shuts down. Then remove spark plug and test for spark by grounding the outer shell of the plug on the engine's metal surface.

BE SAFE!
Keep your face away from the spark plug hole as you pull the rope to test for spark. Expelled fuel or vapors can ignite via the removed spark plug or any subsequent arc.

If no spark when hot, and good spark when cold, replace ignition coil.
Find your EXACT model number on your unit, then go HERE to lookup the part number of the coil. Call your local reputable repair shop and ask if they have it in stock or can order for you.
Hope this helps.
