It take a day to charge the 260 WITH the correct cable for your computer as it will only trickle charge it.
Car charge does it in 2 - 3 hrs. If car is not charging it check the fuse in the end of the charger

  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F

My garmin in nuvi 1350 will not charge it keeps saying the battery is low

Nuvi 1350 charges in 4 to 8 hours. If your Nuvi is not accepting a charge, you may have a loose or bad USB cable. Note that the Nuvi can be charged with a phone charger. Charging it with a connection to a computer moves charging time toward 8 hours and more towards infinity if you don't have the driver installed on the computer. Turn the Garmin off. If the driver ins installed in the coputer, plug the Garmin into the computer and then hold down the power button on the Garmin for 30 seconds.

Will not stay on when not plugged into the car outlet?

first make sure that the device is indicating that the battery is being charged or that the battery is fully charged. this is indicated on the menu screen by the battery icon as being 4 bars of full green color.
if the unit will not charge in your vehicle, you might need to replace the fuse that is located at the tip of the vehicle adapter.
1. to change the fuse unscrew the black, round end piece on the vehicle power adapter and remove it. inspect the fuse to see if it is blown. If not end here.
2. if determined the fuse is blown remove the fuse (glass and silver cylinder), and replace it with a 1A fast blow fuse.
3.ensure that the silver tip is placed in the black end piece. screw on the black end piece
if the fuse isn't blown and the unit still wont charge you may have received a usb cable with your Garmin Nuvi. If you didnt recieve one any mini usb cable should do. On this model you can connect the Nuvi to a computer using a usb cable. And see if you can charge your unit through this method. *Note* that the computer must be on for the unit to be able to be charged.
If you can charge your Nuvi unit on the computer then you may have something wrong with your cars adapter. I doubt this is the problem however if the unit is able to be turned on.
If you cannot charge the unit via a car adapter (with working fuse) or a USB cable. The most likely problem is the battery is no longer accepting a charge. On the listed unit a Garmin Nuvi 265 the battery is not user replaceable. So you would have to contact Garmin to get the battery changed or see if there is a local battery store that is able to change a battery on this model unit.

The power off

  1. Make sure you are sliding the power button all the way to the left.
    • If the unit does not respond, it may be that the battery is not charged.
  2. Connect the nuvi to a power source such as the USB cable and your computer.
  3. Reset the device, if the problem persists, by sliding the power button to the left and holding it in that position for 10 seconds
    • This resets the unit and prompts it to power on.
  4. Contact Garmin Support if this does not solve your problem at www.garmin.com

I had the same problem. When you have your nuvi plugged into your cigarette lighter it doesn't charge. Your battery is probaly near dead. I called Garmin and they told me to plug it into my computer via the usb cable. Turn the Garmin off and let it charge for several hours. That did the trick

Garmin 2005 will not charge, new in November of

Make sure the internal battery is charged by connecting it to your computer with the included USB cable. Make sure the computer is on and running. Let it charge at least a couple of hours and then try to turn the GPS on while still connected to the computer. If the unit still will not turn on you might need to return it to Garmin.

Garmin Nuvi 760

Sounds like you both have a battery problem. I experienced a similar problem when trying to charge via the USB-cable connected to my computer.
Ended up buying an original charger (expensive) and the charging went smooth.
The car charger should in any case work fine, so probably your battery is not very healthy.

Try holding your finger on the battery symbol for about 10 sec. The unit will then switch to a technical page. There you can observe the battery and charging voltage. When I plug in my computer USB-cable, I read around 4,4V and that is not sufficient for charging my battery.
When connected to the original charger, this voltage rises to about 5V which gives a nice charge. When unplugging charger, the unit displays the battery capacity. If the charging voltage is OK, but battery capacity drops quickly after you unplug charger cable, the battery is probably bad. (Of course you have to charge is for some time) I think around 4V battery voltage give 100% capacity. 3,9V gives about 90% capacity.
This will not solve your problem, but can give you an idea about what is wrong.
Good luck.

First time use / battery charge

The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.

Garmin nuvi won't turn on

folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
