I have a 2004 GC Limited with 105,000 miles. The vehicle emits a lvery loud whine after ignition that changes in frequency with RPM, independent of whether the car is in gear or not. Seems to be associated with the front end gear box or steering mechanism as it can become more pronounced when the wheels are turned, either at rest or underway. The whine tends to be loudest when the vehicle is cold, and tends to lesson when the vehicle has been underway for some period of time, has some temp. dependency. Any ideas of what is causing this very pronounced whine? How to remedy?
It sounds like your power steering fluid is low. When the fluid is low there will almost always be a constant growl coming from the pump. Worst case - it may be the pump itself going bad. . I own 3 Jeeps but have only had this problem on my 87 Cherokee.
Ford PS pumps are notorious for making noise as they get old, but they still seem to work ok. This may be the case with your Jeep. If the PS still works and the fluid level is normal, it may just be a matter of whether or not you can stand to listen to the noise.

Fluid leak was found in the PS system. Filled the reservoir and the whine disappered after a mile or so of driving. Whine returns on start up after the car sits overnight and then it goes away again after driving a bit. I believe the system is leaking fluid and needs to be refilled from the reservoir on start-up to refill the system.
Need to find the leak, but you put your finger on the problem. Thanks,
