Macintosh g4 running itunes 7 will erase and format rio s35s but will not write new tracks on the device. I have upgraded firmware to latest mac version for rio, still no write. Any suggestions appreciated.
Went to Rio Support page - can't download firmware file - link is broken. Can't call them unless you pay $19.95. This player is old and not worth that much but wanted to give it to my daughter.

Yes.
You should use the Disc Utility in Macintosh >Hard Drive> Applications>Utilities>Disc Utility to format the new externql to Mac OS Extended Journalrd or non-Journaled is fine.
For video applications I prefer non-Journaled.
Select the drive on the left side of the window to highlight it.
Select the Erase tab. (Top of window)
Select VolumeFormat: and Name:
In Secutity options select Zero Out Data, hit Erase (middle of window) and wait for formatting to complete.
Could be an hour or two depending on disc size.
There is a possibility that the format may be different then the MP3 Player. You may need to connect the MP3 directly to the computer in order to transfer the files.
The Rio Carbon will not play songs from iTunes unless they are in mp3 format. If you cannot download the songs in this format then I would recommend a program such as mediacoder to convert the tracks. I don't know why iTunes was recommended for the Rio but I would just use drag and drop into the folder called Music on your Rio.
Try connecting it without the batteries. If the device shows up in My Computer, right click on it and select format.
It shouldnt need any drivers. They all use the Windows media Player default drivers.
Best of Luck.
Ok, Connect your MP3 player to your PC then if the computer recognize it then I recommend a "Firmware Update".
link to firmware update for Rio Sport S35S
Windows Version
http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/downloads/RioS/RioSSeries_firmware_203.exe
Mac OS Version

If it doesn't work. Then there is a hardware problem in your Rio, maybe the BIOS ROM went bad.
Good Luck
I have a rio s35s and want to know how I can use it with itunes. It doesn't seem to recognize the rio.
