Sound like a driver issue. Did you do an upgrade to Win 8? If so you will have to locate drivers for the devices that Win 8 does not have stored, beeing a new OS that is a common problem on older computers.
That said, does your volume work ? Can you use the tray icon to control volume? Is the audio working at all?

Can asus k42f be ugraded to windows 8?

Windows 8 has updated drivers as much as you would get from Asus built into win 8.

Go to devise MGR, if windows 8 did not load drivers, you will see a flag.

See what hardware did not load a driver and then use the win 7 driver.

You don't do anything to make a win 7 driver work, if the driver is newer, and signed it will install, if it's older then the driver windows installed, it won't install. If you see a flag and windows did not install a driver, then try the win 7 driver, or go to the MFG of the hardware and see if there is a win 8 driver.

You can also run windows update, if win update see's a newer driver out it might pick it up and give you a install option.

Now, your chipset, and most hardware has windows 8 drivers out.

The drivers are the biggest problem, the biggest problem for you is the BIOS was not set for windows 8.

So you could find even with the best drivers, win 8 slower or has bugs more then win 7 will have.

Me, I would bench test all the hardware with win 7, then with win 8 and see which one is better.

Very slow installation of windows 8 on asus p5kpl/am/ps

Can be a lot of things, can be your hard drive.

Your PC is not set to run win 8, yes people put it on older machines, but some don't realize it's not running properly.

Windows 8 has a call for a CPU that has- PAE, NX, and SSE2 features, if the CPU does not have these you will have problems.

Most all motherboards that now support win 8, have had BIOS updates for the kernel of win 8. Only the newest one's out are set to support win 8, but they had BIOS made for it.

Your system has no BIOS updates at all.

There is a utility that will check your CPU to see if win 8 will run on the system, but you need have the OS working, like win 7.

Read this page, and try and run this utility. It would be best for you to reinstall win 7 and run it.

The only reason win 8 will work better is if it is on a system that was made to run it.

Here is the link to read and the test.

How can I install Windows 8 on my computer with M2N MX SE motherboard?

Hello try the asus homepage here:

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=M2N-MX&p=1&s=24

The vista drivers should work, when you install windows 7 again.
The files has to be unziped, before you install the driver.
But that does not mean the drivers will work on win 8.

Here are the other models of the mainboard:

http://support.asus.com/Download/ModelList.aspx?SLanguage=en&keyword=M2N-MX&type=1

Consider to buy a new mainboard, that supports win 8.

A new mainboard cost around 100 dollars, and the cpu aswell.
You maybe have to buy new ram, because all new mainboards have ddr3 ram.

Good luck

It's a commom problem when you upgrade to a new OS, Win 8. You have to find the Win 8 drivers. Is that the only thing? In Device Manager, search for hardware changes, locate Win 8 drivers at ASUS website.

Windows 8 pro sound problems

You can sometimes you can use Win 7 drivers for the audio, found on the HP website: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3837660#N231 ,for your onexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 . That said, you may have to change the compatibility of the driver to WINdows 8, you did not say 32 or 64, and install it to your audio device. Have you notices other devices in Device Manager that are not working properly? I had a similar situation, Audio, Modem, Card Reader, when I upgraded an old (2005) Gateway MX6421 to Win 7 pro N 64 I had to locate the drivers, (from a HP site), change a few lines of code in the drivers and change compatibility to Win 7.

My asus p5vd2-mx se graphics intergrated motherboard has started playing up since i installed windows 7 my sound has gone and keeps freezing etc

There have been quite a few issues with Windows 7 compatabilty with software from prior versions. You have VIA P4M890 and VT8327 chipsets, Via Unichrome Pro graphics and Realtek ALC660 sound. Asus does not show support for Windows 7 and your board byt, in some instances, Vista will work. Tjis is Asus's link:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5VD2MX_SE/#download
You can try your sound here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
The Unichrome Pro doesn't show anY support passed Win XP. You do have a PCIe x 16 slot so, if you can't live without Windows 7, a graphics card with windows 7 support is an option. With the Radeon HD cards, you can get sound and audio.
