Sounds like the ground connection (-ve) to the earphone socket is broken.

When you plug in the earphones, they ground through the control section on the board. Poor sound is another sympton of this problem.

If you have any soldering experience, dismantle the player, and re-solder the 4 connections to the headphone socket.

HEADPHONES/EARPHONES WILL NOT WORK WITH MY IPOD, THEY DID BEFORE

First, try using another set of earphones, if that doesnt work, I would try to reset your device. If your on an ipod touch, press and hold the lock button and home button until the device turns off and the apple logo appears, let go and see if that works. If youre on a nano, flick the hold button off then on then off again, then press and hold the center button and menu button, if neither one works, your head phone jack in your device might be bad.

Cant hear the music

Try replacing the head phones with a known good ear phones, then check if it'll work. If it does, it means that you need to replace your head set.

Head ear phones works

have you tried other headphones or earphones
some headphones lose connection in the wire  and will cause a short where one side works and the other doesnt
if this is not the problem may have a lose jack on the inside of the player and will probably have to have it serviced

My headphones wont work everthing else is fine

Hi There,                The input for the head phone is a 32 ohm input. You need to get the proper 32ohm headphone for it. It seems that you tryed others but there are 16 ohms and 32ohms headphones. But if they do not work then it is your input connection or the device if your headphones work on other devices. You should bring the product back as a faulty device to the store and exchange it with your reciept then.  For the headphone that works on one side it can be the headphone jack that does not fit properly into the hole input (female jack). The one side does not touch or connect for it to work. It happens to cheap headphones and some good ones too. The male jacks on the headphones are slightly off it specification size by a small amount that it is not noticed by the naked eye, so it does not get a good connection.Try another head phone if you haven't tryed that

Locked

There's a lock button by the headphone jack. Flip that switch and you should be good to go.
