I bought the laptop two weeks ago. Running Windows 7 64-bit. Haven't really installed anything except iTunes, Open Office, and the updates that the computer gives me no choice in. Last weekend, it stopped drawing power from the battery. It will recognize the battery. It will charge the battery (sort of. It says it's charging, but it never seems to go up much), but if I unplug the cable, I may as well have unplugged a desktop. Instant hard shutdown. This happened to my last laptop perhaps a year ago (an Acer Aspire running Ubuntu).

Since is shows it as charging then your power cable should be working. So it looks like a battery issue but batteries just don't die unless a cell inside dies then they will stop working. Try taking the battery off and making sure that the connections are clean then put it back in. If that doesn't work give the battery a good full charge then bring the battery and laptop back to where you bought it and get them to test the battery to see if a cell died.

What happens when you use the computer with the battery out. Just running from the charger?

either plug in the back of the laptop is shot or you need a new hardrive

Sorry. It seems that your battery is dead.
If your laptop is working fine on AC power only (with the battery disconnected), then your battery will need to be replaced.
I hope this helps.
