After you replace the imaging drum, you should reset the imaging drum's counter. To reset the counter, YOU MUST LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN AND THEN press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.
SOURCE: Dell 1700 Transfer Roller
These series printers have a typical problem of the paper pickup rollers wearing out resulting in jams, crooked feeds and partial feeds. a quick fix:
take the paper tray out, turn the printer on edge and locate those two rubber roller bands on the pickup arm. Peel them off, flip them inside-out and return them to the rollers. This restores thier sticky rubber side so the papper feeds properly.
Now if you are a heavy printer, you can order some of these from dell for the next time. Washing these in handsaop and water works sometimes too. never use alcohol.
SOURCE: dell 1700 will not feed paper
If your Dell 1700 laser printer is not pulling paper all the way, try cleaning the pick up rollers.
To access the pick up rollers. Turn off the printer. Unplug everything from the back of the printer. Take out the toner/drum and set this aside out of the light (the drum is effected by light). Remove the paper tray. Set the printer on its backside. The rollers are located on the underside of the printer where you just removed the paper tray. You may have to move a blue flap to get at the rollers. Take a damp paper towel and clean these off. Another possible solution is to take the grey rollers off and turn them inside out and then place them back on the printer.
The pick up rollers should not be shiney, or cracked and dryed out. If they are, they will not pick up the paper to feed it into the printer. The tires should have "traction" to them so that they can grip the paper and feed it into the printer.
Once you have the tires cleaned off or turned inside out and placed back on reassemble the printer and try printing.
