Hi! I have had this DVD recorder for about 3 or 4 years. I have been very happy with it, for the most part. As time went on, it got VERY particular which DVDs it would accept for recording. Now it just mostly makes coasters....it has a variety of ways to reject discs, usually "wrong disc type". It has become temperamental. It plays ok. Even the discs I have been able to finalize play fine on other players. This unit wasn't cheap, and I'd really like to keep it. I figure it's just tired out. Rented dvds play fine. So I looked under the hood and there's a Pioneer 104 RZ/2 inside! Just like in a computer! I have not taken it out, yet. My question is, assuming that replacing the drive will solve the problem, is it just a simple unscrew-the-old- put-in-the- new? Does it have to be (the same model) Pioneer? Is there anything I'd have to do to the new drive before I put it in? Any "software" needed? Has anyone done this? Any hints/tips would be appreciated; Like how to uninstall/reinstall the tray "door"

Oh one more thing which might be helpful...there is a small fan on the back of the drive; NIDEC DF251R. It spins, then stops, then spins, stops...the larger fan on the back of the case spins constantly.
Tell me the little fan is causing the issue!
(will the new drive have a fan?)
I have seen on this site mentions that this kind of recorder drive can be swapped out pretty easily.
This is a great unit with a tired or non compatible with faster speed discs...and your advice is to trash a 600 dollar machine (retailed for 800) because of a fifty dollar part?
