1. Printer reads "Black ink empty. Replace cartridge." The cartridge is 3/4 or more full.
2. I took out all cartridges to check ink. All almost full. Now printer reads "no cartridge."
3. Cartriges will not empty, instructed to replace when cartridge is 1/3 or more full.
FYI: I will never buy another Brother product.I've had nothing but trouble since the day of purchase. I believe the printer to be defective. Brother should offer a refund. I do not want a replacement.

You can choose to print in black only. However, the black print will use not only the ink from the black ink cartridge but it will also draw from the 3 other color ink cartridges.
Bottom line: You will need sufficient ink in all ink cartridges even to print in black only.
Please read your HP 6700 user's manual, starting on page 74 of the manual.
In case you do not have the user's manual for your printer, this is the link so you can download and save the PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader software, free) version of the manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03227497
Its simply because the cartridge is not making a good contact with its socket.

Unfortunately, like most multi cartridge ink jet printers when one ink is empty the printer will cease printing regardless of whether you just want to print in black and white and you have plenty of black ink left.
I have heard of people tricking the printer into believing the cartridge is full by placing coloured tape etc in front of the ink sensing device but I am not sure how the Brother senses the ink levels as i have some aftermarket ink cartridges for mine which seem to be completely non-opaque (unlike the originals).
The need to have colour cartridges in even if you only ever print with black ink is good news for Brother as the MFC-210c uses a large amount of ink during it's routine cleaning cycles (that you cant stop) and will empty all 3 cartridges in under 6 months without ever printer a single drop of colour ink.
Sorry about all the bad news, at least your not alone......
Changed the ink cartridge, but printer says ink is empty mfc-j475dw
