Hi all. I have a problem with the LCD display constantly flashing on my SB-600. It has been doing this for months. It seems to work OK, but is annoying. Any Ideas? Thanks Boomer03.
I have the same problem and it was pretty serious. For several weeks I kept the flash unit enclosed in a plastic bag filled with silicagel (desicant) and it seems that it does better, but the problem is not solved for good (2-3 events in several hundred fires).
I think it is a problem with the high voltage chopper (misinsulation or something) and it gets worse in humid environement. This is difficult to prove, but it is the most likely explanation.
The screen started blinking several months ago and never stopped since, but the flash operates normally.

I have the same issue with my SB-600, although it does seem to be working properly otherwise. I was in a very reputable camera repair shop yesterday having a D50 serviced when I brought up the blinking issue with the SB-600. They said they've never seen that phenomenon before (although they do all the repairs for Disney, who uses the SB-600 exclusively). The tech said that the blinking display is some kind of "error message" and probably related to an issue on the circuit-board. What puzzled him more was the fact that the unit seemed to be working despite the blinking.

I had exactly the same issue, and ended up sending it in for $110 worth of service. The true annoyance is that they would not tell me what the problem was, and yesterday it began again (outside of the repair warranty). It's also firing randomly . . . I'm disappointed to say the least.

My SB 600 is doing the exact same thing. I used Nikon's online support service and this is the response I got: "I would try doing the 2 button reset on the flash and then see if that helps. Also disconnect any battery packs you may have connected especially if its a third party battery pack. If none of the above work then please service the speedlight" Sounds like they don't know what it is, either. I tried the reset to no avail. I'm not sure I want to send it in to have it fixed, since it does seem to be working. But you're right, it's annoying.

Thanks Brav.
We had the random firing thing going on also. We found a crack in the shoe mount that caused the flash to lose contact every now and then. When it regained contact it flashed. Check for a hairline crack in the plastic near where the metal contacts the top of the shoe.
As for the blinking display, it's still happening, even after numerous services.
Take care

I have the same issue with Nikon SB-600. The tech support was not help. If I got it repaired it, the estimate was are around $110. All they do is specify "B2" moderate repair and replacement of parts but could not advise why or how the problem started. Nikon Tech support stinks and very disaapointed with the service received.
I don't remember how it started, but basically for the life of my speedlight, the display has flashed. Annoyance aside, everything else is fine.
